Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
If you partially remove the center console and disconnect the wire that connects to the latch mechanism for the lid, it will make the car honk when you lock it.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect wire' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect wire' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Mark read your manual, I think you can set the alarm to honk when locking.

There is no way to set the horn to activate when locking the car (no dealer programmable option either).

On my Mini Cooper, way deep in the computer settings, you can set the type of confirmation you want.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Who was the genius that designed the 996 alarm with no audible confirmation of arming, disarming? It is annoying. I thought I read somewhere you can do something with the console switch so that the car thinks it is open which will then give you a honk. Anyone do this? advantages, disadvantages?
I prefer the no honk confirmation. I think it is actually a better design. If you have ever lived in a condo/townhouse/apartment complex with people coming and going at all hours, or your office is next to a parking area, you will shortly wish that every car had that stupid horn disabled. If you leave the center console unlatched (open) the car will honk to give you a reminder that something is not secure (gas cap flap, hood, engine lid, etc.), but that is not very good if you ask me. I think somewhere I read that you can go to the dealer and have them program for horn/light confirmation, or none. On my Mini Cooper, way deep in the computer settings, you can set the type of confirmation you want. I turned it all off. That's just me.
Mark read your manual, I think you can set the alarm to honk when locking. I remember deactivating this feature when I bought my car. And yes if you leave your center console unlatched the car will honk when you use remote to lock it.

There is no way to set the horn to activate when locking the car (no dealer programmable option either). An audible sound indicates one of the sensors is open. Hit the button twice quick you also get an audible alert, but it deactivates the IR sensor inside the cabin.
My hearing is not the best but I can hear the locks working when I lock or unlock my Boxster and my Turbo. The lights (parking lights) flash too.
Frankly, I prefer a silent (or nearly silent) car locking system. I hate those freaking cars that beep/honk when locking/unlocking.
I prefer no-honk as well, but most of my other vehicles have louder door locks that you can hear if you are close to the car...
The 996's combination of 1) single button for lock/unlock rather than a separate lock button, 2) poor remote range, and 3) very quiet door locks has me double-checking that the doors did in fact lock more than I would like.
Sorry, but notifying your neighbors every time you lock your car is obnoxious. It clicks when it locks/unlocks. I'm 60 years old and have bad hearing yet I can still hear it . Put on your big girl panties and suck it up, Bucko.
My other two cars sound the horn every time they lock and I hate that.
Pressing the button a second time gives you a honk, and disables the interior motion sensor alarms (in case someone is in the car or something). Holding it down probably does the same thing?
I use this feature when I put sun shades in my car when it's parked. Sometimes they will shift and set off the alarm.
As it's been said in several permutations, if it honks when you arm the alarm, there's a non-critical circuit open (like the center console). If a critical circuit is open (like a door or the hood), the alarm won't arm.
I much preferred life with my Boxster after I broke the alarm connector in the center console and had an audible "beep" thereafter. I have resisted the urge to similarly "fix" my 911.
Damn. I was wondering why my 996 just started beeping after locking the car. I removed my center console this winter and I was sure I had connected the sensor in the console but I guess not.
Thanks for answering my question even before I posted it. This forum rocks
