I was getting nowhere fast with the magnet - too much resistance, but there is a hole bored through the center of the detent, which can be used for extraction.

Reason is that there is vacuum with the tranny fluid with the detent that makes it difficult for you to just use any magnet.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

The Gbox detent worked for me, when I first bought my 99 last year with 117K miles, it was popping out of second a lot, very anoying.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 99 has 76,000 miles and while second gear is not popping out, first gear started to. Did a little looking and found a few people with same issue and the Gbox detent worked to solve the issue for some. Well, I figured it a cheap way to start. If it works...great, if not...rebuild. It seemed easy enough, and even though the workspace is tight, I managed to get the detent cover off. Now the detent won't come out. I have contact with a magnet but not even budging. The guys at gbox said to heat it up. I've tried and maybe just not got it hot enough. Torched it for a while and the bottom of the transmission was very warm to the touch so it had to be very hot where I needed it to be. Not hot enough??? Anyone else have this problem and found a solution? I feel so defeated after struggling forever on getting the cover off!!!

POST 2Original post

Maybe try shifting it 1-2 a couple times to see if it will "wiggle" it loose? Or have someone do that while you try the magnet.

POST 4Original post

I hope you tried everything it says on the page http://www.gboxweb.com/detent.html Good luck. Wish I could help more.

POST 5Original post

I did the 2nd gear detent with Ferd (redridge) and had a tough time. Reason is that there is vacuum with the tranny fluid with the detent that makes it difficult for you to just use any magnet. You can either drain the tranny fluid to a lower level so you can get at it easier or try your luck with a more powerful magnet. It took Ferd over an hour to get it out.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I'll try with the tranny fluid drained. I was planning on changing, anyway. The guys at gbox said to use heat b/c it might have some residue (teflon, I think he said) and heat would burn or melt it off. Chsu74, did Ferd have the tranny out or in the car when removed and how did he finally get it out?

POST 7Original post

We did it with the tranny in on a lift. He just kept at it and only could get a piece of it out for the longest time. It was a royal pain..

POST 8Original post

vacuum? Seal your air gun in the fill hole and pulse it a couple times. Maybe not if the fluid is above the level of the detent access.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finally got the detent out! Air gun proved worthless...that thing was stuck. Drained the fluid and used a neodymium magnet with massive pull force. Lift a little with the magnet, push back down, repeat...about a thousand times. Seriously, I worked until hand got too cramped and would come back later. After 4 days of work it came out. chsu74, thanks for letting me know how hard it was but that it could be done. I would have thrown in the towel, otherwise. Let's hope this solves my problem.

POST 10Original post

Keep meaning to try this. Please keep us apprised, I'm interested to know if it makes a difference... Cheers!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So far, so good. Put about 30 miles or so on tonight with plenty of stopping and shifting from neutral to first. No pop outs to report. My wallet is happy...for now.

So it sounds like it the gbox fix really worked? Going to order one next week and see if it cures my 2nd gear pop-out when cold.

POST 14Original post

I did the 2nd gear detent fix on my wifes 996. 2nd gear was popping out like crazy when cold. I used my own detent (not the Gbox one) and it does help. If your synchros are bad obviously the detent won't fix your transmission issues but as far as the pop-out goes it definitely helped.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 9521584

Did you make your own detent? Or perhaps you modified your old detent by filing it down? Please elaborate.

POST 16Original post

The Gbox detent worked for me, when I first bought my 99 last year with 117K miles, it was popping out of second a lot, very anoying. After installation of Gbox detent have not had the problem since. I now have 126K on the car. It was difficult to get the old detent out. By manually working the shifter back and forth at the transmission it came out enough to get some plyers on it and wiggle it out the rest of thee way.

POST 17Original post

Sounds like its definately worth doing, thanks.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 9521597

Correct I had my friend who has a machine shop do it for me so it engages all the way and help with the pop-out.

POST 19Original post

Here's a tip for extracting the old detent if you have the tranny in the car and you are working from underneath. I was getting nowhere fast with the magnet - too much resistance, but there is a hole bored through the center of the detent, which can be used for extraction. Get a hanger or thin steel rod, cut to about five inch length, and put a sharp bend in it about an inch from the end. Then cut the wire at the bend so that there is a slight bur on the tip from the bend. Test it on your new detent to verify that it will grab. Bend the other end of the wire 90 degrees, toward the first bend so you can get a good grip on it when you push the old detent out. So the wire will now be in the shape of an "L". Now insert the burred end of the wire all the way through the detent, hook the burred end, and it will pull (push from your point of view) out like a wine cork, only easier...
