Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I have introduced myself already a few months ago but wanted to start a thread that I can update along the way with any maintenance or mod's I perform to my car. I do most of my own work except the heavy engine work. I purchased a 2003 996 C2 with 24,000 miles on it from a Connecticut dealer. I knew I wanted a lower mileage car for reasons other than the miles on the motor. I know these cars need to be driven but wanted a clean, accident free and re-paint free car with good service history and this one checked all the boxes. Here it is when I brought it home. web porsche.jpg

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So first things first, you know where this is going... Had the car for two days and brought it to South Shore Performance to have the IMS bearing replaced with the LN Engineering bearing and RMS replace. Old bearing that was removed looked perfect, no play or visible issues but now I have piece of mind. Here is a pic of the bearing that came out. Web CAM00212.jpg Web CAM00213.jpg

POST 3Original post

Hey Mark, As a fellow 2003 996 C2 owner, I'll follow your thread! So far, the saga is starting off in a familiar manner. The week after I bought mine, it was in the shop getting the LN bearing installed. Like yours, the old one seemed fine.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Forgot one I did earlier. I really wanted the silver gauge bezels but didn't want aftermarket bezels over the top of the factor bezels, I wanted it to look just like the factory option. So, I removed the cluster, dismantled it, masked what needed to be masked and sprayed the factory bezels. Here is a before and after. Web IMG_1107.jpg Web CAM00160.jpg

I got it in April of 2013, so coming up on one year. It had about 100K on it, so I had a lot of PM work done (water pump, AOS, LN IMSB, plugs, and a bunch of other stuff). I've driven it about 11,000 miles since I got it.

Very nice, 11k in a year, you have enjoyed it. Being in California you get to use it all year so that is a huge plus.

Yep, tracked it and autocrossed it too. Certainly not a garage queen... I bought it to drive!

Great upgrades, very tasteful and done with style. I met Mark and saw his car in person. Car is minty mint clean and a great example of a well taken care of 996. Nice car and a nice guy! Keep the upgrades coming and don't forget to update this thread so we can all enjoy the progress. Heard the Fister D upgrade is worthwhile, music to the ears!

As far as upgrades not much planned for now other than a Numeric shifter, which should arrive by the middle of next week. I see you swapped out your orange markers, how did I know that was coming! Car looks great. Love those sport exhaust tips, may have to go that route down the road.

POST 25Original post

Nice stuff Mark! Our C2s are almost identical. I just picked up a silver 03 with 33k on it as well. Those skirts and sport exhaust tips really make a difference

POST 26Original post

hey mark were did you get the mk11 side skirts and how much did you get them for if you dont mind me asking ,looking for some my self and the car looks great

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11195055

Thanks. I picked them up from a local dealer at cost through a friends shop. Your best place to get them is either Suncoast Porsche or ECS Tuning. If I remember correctly ECS was a little more expensive but shipping was much cheaper than Suncoast.

POST 28Original post

Great looking C2. I've been looking at GT3 skirts also, they look superb!

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am considering removing the Carrera from the engine lid and replacing it with the 911 emblem. Are there many haters of doing that out there? Personally I like the way it looks better and pays tribute to the heritage. I would most likely put the black 911 on. Thoughts?

POST 30Original post

Why not. So far everything you have done to your 911 has been done because you like it, and it really does look nice. You can always change it back if you change your mind later.

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mufflers are out, pretty straight forward job. Now to find someone that can do the modification locally. Web CAM00236.jpg

POST 39Original post

I just took mine to a muffler shop with a picture of what I wanted done. I had them open up the PSE port and connect a pipe (gundo hack), nice sound at WOT but sometimes I wish it was a bit louder. The fister D mod puts a small pipe in between the two existing pipes, I believe that's supposed to be a bit louder and some people prefer that. I also bypassed the helmholtz resonator with a silicone straight intake pipe off eBay for $20, made a significant difference and now sounds great. Covered the resonator with a rubber pipe fitting from Home Depot.

POST 40 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just got the mufflers back. Very pleased with the job, he used stainless 1 3/4 pipe. The sound is absolutely amazing, this has to be the absolute best mod anyone could do. Many say it does not add horsepower, not sure if that is true or not. Clearly the exhaust would be more free flowing now so I would think it might add a little but not enough to tell in the seat of your pants. Web CAM00240.jpg Web CAM00241.jpg Web CAM00242 (1).jpg

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

One more thing, I will say Youtube videos do not do the sound of this mod justice.

POST 43Original post

Welcome Mark. sharp looking c2. What next? coilovers? spacers? alcantara shift **** and steering wheel? what's our budget? Seriously a set of 200 cell cats will make nasty exhaust roar

POST 44 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11248590

Thank you. Like every other hobby car I have owned when ever I say I am done, I'm not. The Fister D mod was great for me, I want to keep the exhaust note within reason so the Wife will get in the car. My last car (1969 Camaro) was loud and the wife hated being in it. Next up is double din radio install then I may consider lowering it at some point. As far as budget, what the hell is that??? LMAO.

POST 45Original post

Nice work with the mufflers. I hear you re: the wife and exhaust sound. I loved having long-tube headers on my Corvette, but Mrs. Schnell couldn't STAND the combination of smelling uncooked hydrocarbons from running catless and the (awesome!) noise.

POST 46Original post

Quotes source post: 11248944

Does your wife make you change clothes and take a shower whenever you ride in that thing? Mine does whenever I ride in my 2002tii.

POST 47Original post

Quotes source post: 11248614

Ha, Ive learned there is no budget with my car. Thankfully my wife comes from a family who loves anything with a motor. She can ride a motorcycle, shift a manual and sometime out drink me! Seriously, the high flow cats are a nice upgrade once yours begin to fail. I wouldn't change them for the hell of it though. The car wont sound much louder until you get to 4000-7000 rpm range. very docile while street driving. Good luck with your project.

POST 48Original post

Mark Enjoy reading about the mod evolution on your car. I purchased an '04 C2 Cab a year ago w/ 64k miles, one owner, maintained at dealership on schedule. Had local Indy replace IMS, some small metallic pieces found during oil change, replaced clutch while doing IMS as it was at 25%, and water pump, play in shaft, RMS, replaced brake fluid, and serviced transmission. A few months ago noted a coolant leak - replaced coolant tank. Oh, one of the first mods was the Fister D mufflers. His shop is a 1 1/2 hour driver from here so I went there for the install. Researched putting a lip on, but driveway scrapes stock front bumper so the lip would have scraped off in a week probably. Installed Row M030 suspension, one of the best mods for me, Lowered the car a little ( 1" front, .5" rear ). Totally changed handling characteristics - no more front float - car more planted plus looks better with the front lower than rear. and 100 pounds lighter than stock. Last week swapped out comfort seats for sport seats which are much better for me @6'2". Seating position better with better back, shoulder support, plus they really look good. Did the Gt3 console delete which gives me more leg room. Lastly, added a 997 shifter, which was another improvement. Shorter shift and much more precise over the 996. So, my mods are more for handling and function - lost about 150 pounds with these mods. Love this car. Btw if name looks familiar, I purchased the rear wheel bumper things from you. Thanks for that.

POST 50Original post

Quotes source post: 11249058

Heh...no. In fact, Mrs. Schnell's interest gets piqued when she walks into the garage to find me under one of the cars in my Pelican Parts coveralls. I complained about having to reinstall the cats, but to be honest, the long-tube headers running under the fiberglas tub made the car unbearably hot anyway.

POST 51 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sonoma, Sounds like you have done a lot of good stuff to your car. Glad those quarter protectors worked out for you. I am liking what you are saying about the suspension upgrade as it may be in my cars future.

POST 52 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just finished a brake fluid flush including the clutch slave. All good, brake pedal feels great and clutch engagement feels better. I think I am ready for spring & summer.

POST 53Original post

Awesome! Like the mods. I recently moved off LI to Rockland, but still visit enough. I like the idea of the exhaust mod. Exhausts are so damn expensive for these cars!
