can I put a 25 amp fuse in there and use a fuse tap (and a relay) to power the seat heaters?

I'd be hesitant to use a tap for a 25-amp circuit.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Maybe a stupid question ... my car (originally purchased in Florida) does not have seat heaters, which are a desirable option here in Upstate NY. Aftermarket kits aren't that expensive, so I'm thinking about adding seat heaters as part of the ever-expanding 2014 list of mods. I've installed aftermarket kits in the past, and -- if you can get the seat covers off and back on -- it's pretty straightforward. Part of the installation (duh) is connecting to a switched power source of at least 20 amps (10 per seat). That's where the question comes in ... my car's fuse box has a vacancy at position A6, which is the 25 amp slot for the seat heater circuit. Does anyone know if that position is actually powered, i.e. can I put a 25 amp fuse in there and use a fuse tap (and a relay) to power the seat heaters? I have no appetite to dismantle the factory wiring harness, so I don't care if there is anything on the output side of the fuse position ... I just want to know if there's anything going into it, or is it only connected if the car has seat heaters. Same question applies, I guess, to position C9 (headlight cleaners) -- another option I don't have. Anyway, just figured I'd ask, before I grab my keys and multimeter and head out into the cold ...

POST 2Original post

I'd be hesitant to use a tap for a 25-amp circuit. It's fairly easy to pull a new wire through the firewall to tap the battery directly. If you need it to be switched, you could drive a relay with the switched phone connector under the center console.

You're right, a tap is probably not a good solution. In the past I've run these with their own inline fuse off the ignition switch ... they draw enough that I try not to connect them to unswitched power in order not to drain the battery when I forget to turn them off. I had considered the phone connector and a relay, but I've already got other plans for the phone connector (mirror and radar detector).
