Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I suspect the key may take a little longer though.

Suggestion
If you have an extra key, then you can check around for someone who could cut one for you, buy a remote from a dealer or whoever, and then have a dealer or independent program it for you.
Leading evidence: 'key may take a little longer' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'key may take a little longer' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check around' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Thats why it was recommended twice in this thread that you give Sunset Porsche a call as they do this for Porsche owners all the time.

You can only use the key head if it has the program # on it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I ordered a key from ebay once....and it didn't work.
you will need to go to a Porsche dealer and show them proof that you own the car. They can order you a new key with the VIN. I assume you only have one key.
If you have an extra key, then you can check around for someone who could cut one for you, buy a remote from a dealer or whoever, and then have a dealer or independent program it for you.
With any car that has electronic remotes, you should always have two keys, and know where the spare one is.
Your dealer will sort this out for you, this depends on which country you are in.
Could I order a blank key from ebay and have a locksmith or the stealer cut it with the VIN code? I know I will have to have the key programmed by the dealer but I wouldnt mind saving a few dollars.
I have heard this is bad. As in really expensive. let us know if you are able to order a key from Germany or if you have to get a new door lock / ignition.
To order the key, I think you have to order a blank and have the dealer cut it for you using the vin # and faxing proof or ownership. I believe the cost for the blank key and cutting is not too bad. Then you need to order the remote with 24 digit program code. Bring the car to a dealer near you and have the dealer program the 24 digit code of your new remote to your car.
Try Sunset Porsche for your parts. I got my remote for around $100, you can also order a key from them. The dealers to program the remote is usually around $150 depending on where you go. Hope this helps.
I found a blank key/remote head on ebay that looks exactly like the missing key. I am thinking I can have that key cut and reprogrammed at the stealer. Should work right?
The blank could be cut be the dealer with your vin #. The remote head will work only if it comes with the 24 digit id tag. Without the id tag, the remote head is useless piece of souvenir. Thats why there is a discrepency in price on ebay.
Thanks for the info. I really dont care too much about remote locking/unlocking. I just want to be able to start and drive the car. The key I am looking at is :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/UNCUT...spagenameZWDVW
again, i would not get blank key from ebay, too many things could go wrong, not to mention that one you are looking at doesn't have the "white tag", meaing you can't program the remote.
if you just want to get a key, not the remote. call Sunset Parts Toll Free [phone removed]
Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.(Pacific Time)
ask them to cut a key for you without remote. they need you fax your paperwork to them.
I ordered a key from ebay once....and it didn't work. The dealer got me 2 new keys including coding for 450 bucks. I still had one key...don't know if it is much more expensive if you don't have any keys.
Current (as of today) situation from our Porsche parts dealer is that keys are cut to order at Porsche USA, approximate turn-round time is 48 hours, then the alarm heads (and you will be buying new ones, won't you?) can be programed.
Big lesson time, owning a $30K and upwards car and only having one key is not a good idea.
get a key with a TAG, no TAG, its useless, go to dealer, no other place, its not worth the headache and also, you will pay $$$ out the butt. Key, cut, program, etc... should be around $300 at US dealer. Good luck!
Funny thing you mentioned going through the dealer. The parts guy at my local Porsche dealer is CLUELESS! He has no idea on how to go about getting a key ordered from Porsche NA. He told me to call back at the end of next week when his parts manager gets back from vacation
..
Thats why it was recommended twice in this thread that you give Sunset Porsche a call as they do this for Porsche owners all the time. I believe a number was even posted for you. Also, I'm not sure if its possible to save money by just using the key portion without a remote head. IIRC, there is a transponder "pill" in the remote head that communicates with the car to start the car. Without the transponder, the key can only be used to lock and unlock the car, it wont turn over. Hence, the need for the dealer to program the car to match the codes in the remote. I understand the notion of saving a few bucks here and there, especially when it seems quite rediculous to $300 for a key. However, you might be out of luck in this case due to the way keys are set up .... but I hope it works out for you.
I realize I will have to shell out some $$$ and thats cool with me. I was just thinking maybe I could get it done sooner by sticking with the local stealer. Guess not... Lesson learned.
I ordered my remote head from sunset on a wednesday morning and received it on Friday (OR to CA). They are pretty efficient. I suspect the key may take a little longer though. GL
Suncoast will not cut me a key because it is a "sensitive" item but the parts guy was very helpfull. After several phone calls I finally got the local stealer to put in the order.
