Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I am not really used for a fuel pump to be in the front of the car!
Leading evidence: 'Use fuel pump' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use fuel pump' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I got this funny whinning noise from the front of the car which whirrs like a very high pitched fan, more like a very high frequency buzz. It is only coming when i turn the engine on (not when i turn ignition only)
I can't find the source of it but it is surely external, eminating from the front left&right tyres surrounds, same pitch same and sound from both sides.
The voice doesnt change or stop when i:
-turn the steering
-press brakes
-engage clutch
-rev engine
-radiator fans stop or engage
-turn lights on or off
It is only coming when the engine starts.
Now this is a drill for SuperLoren!

The things in the front of the car that can make noise are: the radiator fans, the windshield/headlight washer pump, fuel pump, and the sound system amp/cd-player (if you have them).
Since it only happens when the engine is running I would suspect the radiator fans (they have two speeds), the fuel pump or amp.
Try opening the front hood and locating the sound source.
Loren,
You got one right! It must be the fuel pump.
I am not really used for a fuel pump to be in the front of the car! I just tried the car again now and this is what happened:
1) as soon as I engaged ignition on with the key, the noise came for a second and disappeared again ---> fuel pump relay started the pump and stopped when pressure is regained
2) i then started the engine, the noise was not existant for a minute and started coming slowly till it reached the maximum speed (fans are off since car is cold). ----> fuel pump starts flowing continuously
So there it is, my fuel pump needs checking. Tomorrow mechanic is taking the car to remove the pump and clean it with the filter and all.
Fadz, brace yourself to send a fuel pump! Will keep you posted..

By the way, is a fuel pump serviceable or cleanable to eliminate the noise whinning?
Since i didnt get the check engine light for a long time now, it must have still be pumping enough pressure to whatever is after it..
What's the price of these buggers anyway, i cant find one in the sponsors list..

What's the BOSCH equivalent part number of the fuel pump, i am learning BOSCH do the pumps anyway and they're kind of universal with other cars' fuel pumps

Thanks for replies!

There is a fuel filter near the rear center of the car and this is the first item I would replace. Perhaps it is very dirty and can not pull enough fuel.
The pump itself is in the gas tank. This requires a special tool and most likely recalibration of the fuel level sensor. Not to mention the hazard of working around all that fuel.
The part number for the filter (for a 99 Carrera 2) is: 996 110 253 01
The part number for the pump (for a 99 Carrera 2) is: 996 620 103 00
OK Thanks Loren, Noted!
I wont do the work myself actually and the mechanic is quite knowlegeable.. We'll go with the basics of fuel filter then see what happens.
