So for those of you that are worried about every pound, leave off the AC, replace the US sport seats with the ROW GT3 seats, and you should be able to shave off another 100 lbs.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have tentatively decided not to order Bi-Xenons, first because I don't want the extra weight and maintenance complexity, and second because I have had a bad experience with the sharp low-beam cutoff mask on my ex car which I felt compromised visibility significantly. But I have not driven with Porsche Bi-Xenons, so maybe this is less of a problem. What do you think?
Sharp cutoff really only applies to low beam mode, in high beam mode the incandescent high beam bulbs come on and the HID are moved upward about 1 degree.
I'm 62, can't live without them....
Extra weight will be minor, a pound or so, and maintenance will be significantly lower, HID lamps have a much longer lifetime than incandescent, so you only need worry about the high beam bulb life.
Roy, I don't know what the weight difference is, but it can't be more than a pound or so. I removed one of mine once and it was very light (3 or 4 pounds maybe on the high side)
It's GT3 and if they add weight don't get them.
This (GT3) is how IMO all 996s should be (in principle), especially if you're getting it with Clubsport package so adding extra weight like Porsche nowadays does so much makes no sense.
You're getting a real driver's Porsche so why start tampering it with extra weight.
I know it's propably not much but look nat ormal 996's weight and you'll see that all those 'great' luxury items add weight...
BTW, are cupholders an option in GT3?
Just curious because I think they shouldn't.

Karl
That is very sad that Porsche is offering Cup Holders in any model let alone the GT3. How much weight was taken off the old Gt3 from the 996 model in its day?
Each HID igniter module weights about 6 ounces.
So if you include the approximate weight of the leveling/position servomotors my guess is the total HID package would add no more than two pounds.
Just found out that the GT3 in the US will have AC as a no charge option. So for those of you that are worried about every pound, leave off the AC, replace the US sport seats with the ROW GT3 seats, and you should be able to shave off another 100 lbs.

A/C is standard equipment on the new GT3. It is not an option.
Viken,
I beg to differ. It is not shown in the order guide but when my saleman went to place my order today, he had to add AC as a N/C option. The option code is 573 and I have a copy of the order. If you leave off this option code, you don't get AC, same as with the European models.

US dealers don't even have allocations yet? It is my understanding that PCNA has yet to accept orders on the GT3.
BTW, option M573 is for A/C and M574 is for no A/C. This is only applicable to ROW cars which are also available without automatic climate control (rotary *****). AFAIK, our cars will come standard with the auto climate control just like the rest of the 996 models.

Certainly jives with what my dealer is telling me. On the allocation front, my impression from talking with my dealer is that dealers are now hearing from their Porsche reps in a non-official way on getting cars.

It has an order reference number on it and a list of options and colors. The order status is listed as ACPORD.
The option list includes 573 which is A/C with full climate control, so apparently there is an option to leave this off. Either that or the system forces them to enter it, even though it is standard. I'll ask my salesman to attempt to enter the order with a 574 and see what happens, if he can.
Karl
I was told, yesterday, that PCNA is has not given allocations and they cannot key in an order until they do. The dealer went on to tell me they are a "top 1/3rd" dealer and will get an early car, June build. They said a few dealers will get May builds... June build allocations will be given in April??
Maybe Karl has a May build which would allocate in March??

Porsche is known to often include option numbers of certain items on cars which otherwise are sold with these items as standard. I.E. sunroof and cruise control are standard on most US Porsche cars while the option codes are still listed on the production order.

You could be right but the salesman told me it was a June build. I'll give him a call and ask if they actually have an allocation and also about whether they can input an order with 574 (no A/C) or not. I'm certainly no expert at the inner workings of PCNA, so I'll go to the "horse's mouth".
Karl
ha ha, this reminds me of my backpacking days...seeing people saw off the handles to their toothbrushes to save wait in their backpacks, but then they have 5 extra pounds of fat around their waist.
maybe never fill up your gas tank...that will save lots of weight. : )
OK, here's the latest:
- Every dealer is getting one GT3 for April production. These cars are to be specified at this time. It would be my guess that Karl is getting this very first car from his dealer.
- There is NO delete AC option. AC and automatic climate control (option M573) are standard and cannot be deleted from the ordering system.
FYI... I have an option to place an order Tommorrow from dealer for their 1st "Slot",this car has been ordered buy them w/temp. specs which can be changed if I do it by mid next week! However since I'm within weeks to several months from buying 2nd home Fla., I told them I'd rather have their 2nd "slot"(as they refer to it), which means that I've got to do some fancy foot work within appx 30-40 days (If at all)! Dealers w/ "slots/allocations" ARE placing orders w/ the factory NOW!
Help spread the word.. My 2002 C2 is FOR SALE!

I called my salesperson, who said the zone rep told him it was a June build but he didn't seem to know for sure. I asked him to check, but who knows.
He thinks A/C delete is an option, so I told him I wanted to change my order. I'll see if he gets it through. If he does, I'm going to change it back to A/C but I just want to see if it's possible.
