For example: You can probably achieve the same performance upgrade results when installing a LWFW and clutch or replace a set of solid turbo twists with aftermarket lighter wheels for approximately same amount of money.

Suggestion

If I wanted that much more I would sell and use the mod money for the next model up, say a TT or something.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When one has a budget of say $5K or $10K for mods, what are the priorities in their choice of mods and why? For example: You can probably achieve the same performance upgrade results when installing a LWFW and clutch or replace a set of solid turbo twists with aftermarket lighter wheels for approximately same amount of money. Another example is that some people would choose to put a new body kit on their car to give it an original look when that budget would put them into an upgraded stock model. In terms of marginal cost vs marginal return: What is more important? For example this is a 01 C2... http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/s...d.php?t=119108

POST 2Original post

There is currently a used EVO S/C for a 3.4 996 on ebay. I don't think you can find a better "bang for the buck". Your car looks every bit as good (if not better) as the tt pictured.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mark, The picture is a C2 with a TT back mixed in with Gembella body kit. The amount of money spent on this conversion cannot be cheap. I agree with the used S/C....

mutton dressed up a lamb. That decklid was installed by a blind person.

POST 5Original post

Personally I'd rather have a fast car that looks slow than a slow car that looks fast. Hell, if I wanted crappy performance in a good looking car I'd buy a 993!

POST 6Original post

+1 it's just wrong to dress the car up as something that it's not. That car just needs to have Poseur spray painted on the side and it's all set.

POST 7Original post

I may be in the minority but as I do not track my cars I would put my five grand into oem aero parts rather than upgrading suspension, intake, brakes, etc.

POST 8Original post

Well for me it comes down to this. My car needed a clutch and the flywheel was scorched; I replaced them with upgraded clutch and lwfw My brake pads were getting worn... I replaced them with Pagid track pads, SRF fluid, GT3Cup air scoops etc. My M030 orig susp was starting to feel soft n squishy around the track... I did some homework and got an 04 GT3 take off suspension and tightened the heck out of it My 3.4l engine threw a rod.... I replaced it with a 3.6 The smiles just keep on coming. Just me

Paul, I like your idea of routine maintenance. Jim

+1 If the GT3 suspension starts to become soft and can't dampen anymore, I'm sure Paul will eventually get some Motons.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 5128173

+1 ... I'd do almost all of my mods again; maybe next time in a different order: brakes, suspension, weight reduction, performance. If I feel one day that I need to reduce front lift or get more downforce, I might add a front bumper or a wing but not for cosmetic reasons.

POST 14Original post

I want a FAST car that looks good too, short from doing a charger on a NA 996, almost everything else is a wast of cash.I guess it boils down to what do you do with the car? Is it a garage queen?, do you track it at all?, too many variables to suggest what you do with your car.The best return will be you enjoying the car, however that may be.

jesus tapdancing christ that must have been difficult. new throttle and gas pedal, wiring harness, engine (duh), mounts? anything else i'm missing?

POST 16Original post

I like my Mods to have some functionality and purpose as first priority if possible then cosmetic second (for good looks). So far the best improvement is the aerokit, it does help stabilize the car at freeway speeds. Since I don't track my car, stock engine, OEM suspension, wheels & tires are fine for now. I still have a lot fun driving this thing fast around corners, great feeling in the world. Enjoy!

Omar, not all that actually. PM if you want some deets. There is more than one way to get it done. The way that I went and others (JimB with a race car) was to keep the cable throttle and reprogram the existing ECU to manage the 3.6, along with a way to trigger the VC+ when it is supposed to be. That is all.

POST 19Original post

insn't this the 2nd fugly franken 911 this week? I am thinking of the other one with the horrid nose that looks like dried bugger poking out into the airstream.

POST 20Original post

Had to do a double take, for a second I thought it was C units car. He might have to consider another wing move. I will favor cosmetics moves due to it being difficult to improve engine performance on 996's without spending a ton. I am also very content with the stock handling/power/brake combination of mine (best balanced car I've driven). The only disappointment has been the stock sound. The orange hose made it much better at WOT > 4K. I do need and will get mufflers, tinted windows next. I do not plan on spend that much on upgrading mine (plan is the key word). If I wanted that much more I would sell and use the mod money for the next model up, say a TT or something. Interesting question Chao

POST 21Original post

Found a really nice cosmetic mod for all of ya.. In case anyone's engine pops during the week. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSC...em110226043347

Although not technically a mod, I think tires should be the first area addressed...buy the best in order to get the most out of your car.
