I'm not going to make any value judgement about that...but I will say that (1) the dealer offers more inspections & test drives than buying in a riskier auction setting (2) the dealer usually invests in fixing the car up...like that new set of Pzeros that cost $1K (3) the dealer's asking price is of course negotible (4)most 996's you'd look at today are still covered under the transferrable factory warranty.

Using the wholesale as a baseline, I also tried to figure out how much markup the dealers wanted.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking for a used '02 996 C2 in SF Bay Area. Not looking for many options - maybe just PSM, xenon, CD, 18".
Any suggestions on a reasonable price to pay?
It seems like the local dealers here are out of their minds in terms of asking prices!!!
Thanks!
If you want a nice survey of what cars are going for, look on eBay Motors. I bought a 99 C2 Cab, loaded in Houston, TX for over $10K less than the best price I could find in SF Bay Area. I paid a private inspector to look at the car. It turned out to be in perfect condition so I simply flew to Houston and drove it home. Alternatively, I could have had the car shipped for about $750.00.
Good luck!

While the prices may appear to be high at the dealer I would recommend that you find the car you want and then, near the end of the month make the dealer an offer. The end of the month is absolutely the best time to buy because the dealers want to keep their volume up and they will deal. Don't let the asking price and b.s. keep you from buying.
California Motorsports in Sunnyvale is an independent dealer and has great prices of many Porsches. Last month they had a 2001 996TT, seal gray, nav system, 8k miles that they were selling for $96k. The car was perfect!!
Good luck...
I would also recommend Michael at California MotorSports in Sunnyvale, where I purchased my 2001 996 cabrio last month. He let me check the car and test drive multiple times without any high pressure. His inventory is on his website: <a href="http://www.calmotorsport.com/" target="_blank">http://www.calmotorsport.com/</a>
As for pricing in the SF Bay Area, one of my exercises was to look at the wholesale auction prices. I met a "dealer" who will buy on your behalf at the wholesale dealer's auction. Although the right car did not show up for me to buy, I did learn what prices these cars were going down for at the auction. It became my "target" for any dealer conversations.
As of last month, I think that you could expect the following auction prices (+/- $2K) on cabrios:
1999: $45K
2000: $52K
2001: $59K
2002: $66K
While my search was focused on cabrios, I occassionally priced hardtops ...for ~$6K less in each model year.
First observation was how little the options mattered to the price. High end of the range would be for low mileage and a popular color (black or silver). Low end for higher mileage and unpopular color. Damaged cars could of course be much lower than the range.
Second observation was the linearity of the depreciation, around $7K per year. So as the year goes on, expect prices to fall about $500 per month.
I haven't priced 2003 models explicitly, but I have seen ads for "$8000 off MSRP" which would put a $85K vehicle out the door at $77K, which is consistent with the market for used. That makes sense.
Using the wholesale as a baseline, I also tried to figure out how much markup the dealers wanted. Typically expect $10K - $12K above wholesale as the asking.
Final note, find the car you're going to love and don't fret about the last $500 haggling. It will quickly be forgotten. But at the same time, remember the economy is in the dumps and it is not easy to sell a Porsche for full retail. Present yourself as a serious buyer with a "reasonable" target price and ready to make the commitment, and I think you'll find many willing sellers. Good luck!

I would highly recommend that you speak with Trent Jancse of Paramount Porsche in Hickory, North Carolina [phone removed], ext. 1277). I purchased a 2002 C2 Cabriolet with 7,500 miles and a MSRP of $97,500 for $71,500, which included delivery via closed container truck to Los Angeles.
The entire experience with the dealership was very nice and friendly. If you decide to fly to Charlotte, NC to purchase the car (before it is shipped to you), make a long weekend out of it like I did; take the car to the Vanderbilt Biltmore House Estate... an unbelievable experience with the car!
