While the hardtop certainly creates a more civilized cockpit for the cab (if that's what you want), I tend to use it more as a way to change the personality of the car.

Suggestion
The top has been on and off again 4 or 5 times and the experience is the same each time, so re-seating it wouldn't seem to change things.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone seen decibel readings for the 996 HardTop vs. Coupe? (I'm a sucker for a quiet cockpit.)
Who can list some pros and cons (from experience) for the Cab. with HardTop attached vs. the Coupe? (aside from the obvious ability to take it off and go topless!)
P.S. What's a good aftermarket source on the web for the 996 HardTop? A good price?
I can't answer your question specifically but from the seat of the pants my Cab w/the hardtop is as quiet as I recall my 993 couple to be. Don't know anything about decibel count etc., nor have I driven either at the limit. I would bet that decibel count at limit is not very different.
Best place to buy h'top is on ebay.
No decibel readings for you Scotto, but some personal experience...
A cab with a hardtop attached is not as quiet as a coupe. You hear a little more road and wind noise, especially at higher speeds, but the biggest difference for me comes from the fact that cab + hardtop does not equal the structural rigidity of the coupe. Anything that torques the frame (like turning into a curbed driveway with a large curb - at an angle) generates little noises as the hardtop reacts a little differently from the rest of the car. Potholes and large bumps in the road can do the same thing. By the way, the cab without the hardtop - with the soft top either up or down - doesn't do this.
While the hardtop certainly creates a more civilized cockpit for the cab (if that's what you want), I tend to use it more as a way to change the personality of the car. I think the cab + hardtop has a unique look compared to the coupe because of the slight overhang of the top in the back (and combined w aerokit looks cool IMHO). So my cab has 3 personalities: hardtop on, softtop up, softtop down. I'm a convert, and will never go back to a coupe. When the hardtop is on, I still crack the windows open so I can hear what's going on.
I got my hardtop from the dealer N/C - after the fact. He had a lot of excess inventory because a lot of people never used them and ended up returning them.
Ervtx, I don't get that sensation in my Cab. I did but it went away when I re-attahed my h/top. I assume you know there is a TSB out on the attachment of the h'top that will tighten the fit!
Thanks, Don. The top has been on and off again 4 or 5 times and the experience is the same each time, so re-seating it wouldn't seem to change things. The dealer looked at it pretty closely when it was suspected in a problem with the automatic windows, but ruled it out (turned out to be motor/relay related). I'll check out the TSB with him.
Don, can you send me the TSB. I've had a little rattling from the hardtop when maaking slow turns and going over curb cuts and my dealer said it was just inherent.
By the way, my advice to Scotto is to get the hardtop. I think apart from having the best of both worlds--covertible and hardtop--the 996 with the hardtop on looks really unique and is among the better looking Porsches.
My experience is similar to Don's, In other words I have not noticed any noises due to frame torsion. With the hard top up, the thing I notice most is a substantial reduction in engin noise at low speeds. It is very quiet at high speeds. Tire noise on the road (at speed) is more noticable than any kind of wind noise, irrespective of which top is up. Top down, you can't hear anything anyway (at speed). If you are playing your tunes loud enough so you can hear them, so can everyone else.....even if their windows are rolled up!
I looked the other day, e bay has hard tops available in almost all the colors....cheap too.
I have a Turbo and a Cab. IMO the Cab with the ht on is quieter. The softtop, that is in between the interior and the engine is a lot of insulation that the coupes don't have.
For finding one, check with the Florida dealers. For my 00 Cab my dealer got one from Brumos; a lot of Fla customers don't want the top...
Good luck

Scotto,
I too got the hardtop so I could change the look of the car if I wanted. I'm on the phone (with headset)a lot in the car and I ask people if they can tell I'm driving and even with the top down most can't. If the windows are up and the wind deflector is installed it is very quiet. Cab top up quieter and hard top on even better. I don't know how quiet you want it but it seems to be fine for me in most every mode.
Hey, thanks all of you! I started out as a die-hard gonna-buya-Coupe guy and now I'm really considering the Cab w/HardTop as a viable option.
What got me thinking (to start this thread) was coming up next to my ideal car (silver 996) in the onramp light queue and seeing that it was, in fact, a Cab with HardTop. As Speed says above, "the 996 with the hardtop on looks really unique and is among the better looking Porsches."
Cheers!
