I asked this question a couple of weeks ago...someone said that you may actually lose some HP because most engines are designed to use some backpressure.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone installed the Fabspeed 996 muffler bypass pipes? How difficult was the installation and how did you like the sound and performance changes if any?

POST 2Original post

They are very loud, too loud for the street in my opinion, although I know of at least one person who ran them on the streets of Charlotte, NC for a couple years with no tickets. They are relatively easy to install. You have to disconnect and remove the mufflers, which is the hardest part, and then they bolt right on to the cats. Once you've done it a few times, it's maybe a 30-45 minute job. I found it's easier to do with the rear of the car jacked up and the rear tires removed but it is not necessary. BTW, if you are interested in a used set, e-mail me. I have a pair that I don't need any more. Karl

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info. My concern in reading the Fabspeed website was that they might be too loud for the streets. However, did they add any HP when installed?

POST 4Original post

I think this topic was covered a couple of weeks ago. You might want to check the archives. I'll say the same thing I did last time. Pull off a muffler. Take it to your local exhaust shop and have them bend two pipes to match the input and the output of your muffler (one bend). They should charge you about $20 and it will take you 5 minutes to bolt them back on the car. It's a quick way to check them out without spending the $500. I really like Fabspeed's products but I ended up just welding some tips on the pipes I had made. My car is only used on the track though. As for poser, I was more interested in getting rid of weight and reducing heat around the engine than gaining power. I doubt you gain or lose much.

POST 5Original post

I had done that. Had a shop remove the mufflers on my 996. Ran with only the cats - sounds really mean. Only heard it in the shop though. Didnt hear it on the street.

POST 6Original post

You really can't just remove the mufflers and run with just cats. It's much loader in the car with just the cats and the whole car vibrates from the exhaust hitting the insides of the rear fenders.

POST 7Original post

I asked this question a couple of weeks ago...someone said that you may actually lose some HP because most engines are designed to use some backpressure. I would like to measure the bypass pipes with a Db meter. The SCCA has a 106 Db rule for stock class. I think you would lose a considerable amount of weight, and if the HP stayed the same, you would still be ahead of the game. What someone needs to do is get some dyno time..bypass pipes..maybe some aftermarket exhausts....and do a comparo...sounds like a good magazine article....I would do it if I found a place that would give the dyno time

POST 8Original post

In my experience with domestic engines I have never seen one not benefit from less exhaust restrictions. I do not believe the statement about backpressure is very accurate for the size of the Porsche engines. There is a difference between backpressure and scavenging forces in an exhaust system. A car needs some amount of scavenging that is why you see X and H pipes on cars but I dont think backpressure is necessary. Possibly on a very small engine lowering backpressure would affect the performance but not on a larger engine. Having the shop bend some pipe to match the mufflers would probably be your best bet. I have also seen some electric opening exhaust bypasses on some import racers. They simply fit between the cat and the muffler and open when you flip a switch. Im sure that these would be no more than the Fabspeeds and you could close and open them from inside the car. -Andrew
