Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that contain suggestions

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
I was unhappy with my first engine but even though the car was out of warranty Porsche opted to give me a brand new motor and replace all hoses when I started getting orange gunk for oil and coolant.
Leading evidence: 'Replace hoses' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace hoses' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently sold my 993 and am now considering a move to the 996. I am surprised at the prices of the 996's, especially the 99's, many of which are significantly less than the late model 993's. Where there problems with the early models or did they just not hold their value as well?
I know the old Porsche advice to always buy the newest one you can afford, but what other advice can you give me on what to look for with respect to the 996's?
Sorry if this has been asked a million times, but I did do a search and did not turn up relevant info. TIA for your assistance.
Search the archives for more on this. Basically, the later (June on) MY99 builds had a number of early problems fixed. Earlier builds should also have been fixed but via the TSB route.
I bought a used 99, 17k miles, in the spring of 01. The local dealer replaced the engine oil seal at no charge and I recieved a recall notice regarding the need to have the gas cap replaced. I purchased the new gas cap at parts rather than bother with "service".
The car now has about 27K miles, new Michelin tires, full aerokit, BBS-RSII wheels. Just drove it from Memphis to Daytona and return, Memphis to Tallahassee in constant rain with two or three cloudbursts thrown in for good measure. On return Nashville to memphis in snowstorm (lite, by NW standards). Very pleased with overall performance, comfort, gas mileage, etc.
The only short-coming I know of also exists in my 01 C4. The stupid climate control wants to chill the windshield on a HOT (and HUMID) day. This will often lead to condensation forming on the exterior of the windshield when one least expects it.
Say as you approach Birmingham AL in the early evening of what had been an extremely hot July day, just after dark, and having just driven from POE with the A/C on and encountering the humid "aftermath" of a local thunderstorm.
My advice would be that in the summertime NEVER allow the system to run in fully automatic mode. In that mode it will route a substantial level of cooling airflow to the windshield, not only a total waste of cooling capability, but putting you at risk for sudden visual impairment.
I have installed a switch in my 01 so I can disable the A/C compressor altogether during the winter months.
If you are a good negotiator, now is a good time to buy. Given you know the cars, take a look at ebay motors they have quite a few listed.
Also, a great time to by in Chicago. Rizza has a few on the lot.
Mixed feelings.. I was unhappy with my first engine but even though the car was out of warranty Porsche opted to give me a brand new motor and replace all hoses when I started getting orange gunk for oil and coolant.
No problems since but I had problems with my Boxster previous to this car.
According to your goals a mid 90's 993 may be your best bet. Otherwise I would buy a 2002 Carrera or above with the E Gas, Variocam Plus and bigger engine. You get what you pay for and prices are often an indicator of the general publics disdain or approval.
