Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Same problem here: out of the blue the "check engine" came out, I went to the shop and they told me the can not figure that out but it is ok anyway and let me go.
Leading evidence: 'Check engine" came out, i went' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine" came out, i went' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I recentely replace the air filter with a K&N and I must say I am hearing a noise coming from the engine every time I accelerate at the apex when I upshift and therefore I release the gas: it sounds like a high pich somehitng, which I think it is the air going out of the intake through that valve (I don't remember the name but you know what I am talking about I hope).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently, my 996 has been getting relatively low gas mileage. Just the other day, my check engine light came on. Other than these two issues, the car *seems* to run fine. Some web research points me either one of two issues: The O2 sensor is bad or the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is bad.
Question is:
o If it is one these two issues, which problem is it (O2 or MAF)?
o Is it easy to fix by myself?
Thanks a TON for your response!

My 99's "Check Engine Light" came on a week ago, so I got it to the dealer and he said it was an "Evaporative Control Valve" failure. This recycles some emissions somehow. Anyway, my dealer said it was $488 for the parts & labor. I told him that I refuse to pay it. So my service advisor went to bat for me, got back with me the next day and said that Porsche agreed to charge me wholesale on the part, and half price on the labor, bringing the total to $330. This price break adjustment was made due to the fact that it was a certified Porsche, and purchased 7 weeks ago, yet the fine print does state that emissions are generally not covered. O.K. Well, he went on to say that the "Check Engine Light" REALLY MEANS "Emissions". O.K. I went ahead and paid the $330. So I drove it 100 joyful miles over the weekend with better gas mileage and a little smoother non-air conditioned idle, then when I return to town, guess what????? ...the Check Engine Light comes back on, and still is on at present. But the car drives great. So when it's convenient I'll go back to the dealer and go round and round again.
Anybody got any duck tape?
I had the same problem and it ended up being the MAFS. It was just replaced 2 weeks ago and my mileage is up over 0.5 mpg just around town in that short period of time. It was pricey, cost around $600: thankfully had an extended warranty.
Same problem here: out of the blue the "check engine" came out, I went to the shop and they told me the can not figure that out but it is ok anyway and let me go. Gas milage? I don;t check that honestly. Do you have the same noise?
Thank you
Paul
An update on the second time the "check engine" light came on,
on my 99 Carrera. It was a faulty Mass Air Flow sensor. Fortunately it was covered under the certified warranty,
otherwise it would have been between $500 and $600 installed.
