pardon me, I said I was new to the 996 world, yes that is the package mentioned, from my experience in the past the trunk CD changer just gets filled once but I also agree that the option of iPod connection via an adapter cassette may be worth keeping it, actually I DO have a box full of cassettes from the early 80s...hey it may even look retro & cool

It even has an installed Valentine radar detector.

how about $ 46.5 k including a new CDR220, not to forget that during CPO, all brakes & rotors were replaced with 2 rear tires.

looking into buying my first 911, a 2002 C4S, 38k miles, CPO, for $49k as good weather fun car, local dealer sold/traded back and maintained, drives nice, love the engine sound, missing the CD player, who uses Cassette tapes anymore but other than that looks like a clean car, is this a good start for my 911 adventure?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all the good 996 people,
looking into buying my first 911, a 2002 C4S, 38k miles, CPO, for $49k as good weather fun car, local dealer sold/traded back and maintained, drives nice, love the engine sound, missing the CD player, who uses Cassette tapes anymore but other than that looks like a clean car, is this a good start for my 911 adventure?
thanks,
Sam
Sounds exactly like what I bought (except for the advanced technik package). I absolutely love it - and try to drive it every day (and miss it when I dont). What color are you looking at?
color is Silver, it HAS the advanced tech. package, yes, not my first Porsche, actually the 3rd one so far (Boxster 03, Cayenne 05) , but I tell you, the best engine sound so far...so it seems like it's OK to go ahead...will keep you posted with some pictures,
many thanks,
Sam
My mistake... you threw me off when you mentioned the "cassette player". Per the original ordering sheet:
"P04 Advanced Technic Package -- Headlight washers, Bose sound system, Bi-Xenon headlights and 6 Disc CD changer."
So it has the cassette and the CD-changer... well if you have any old books on tape, it will be somewhat handy.
Best of luck with the purchase.
(I also sent you a PM)

BTW, is it possible to connect an iPod directly to the Bose system? hope that is not a MOST (fiber optic system) like my Cayenne.
Sam
Good luck. I would just check a little on the price. I know that it is CPO and a 4S, but it still seems a bit high. It almost approaches 997 and 996TT numbers.
Well, good weather in New England includes occasional rain, that's the main reason I am opting for an all wheel drive 911, my main concern are the heavy snows or ice storm situations which my Cayenne is better capable of handling especially with the better clearance.
Sam
yes, it seems like there is a little room for negotiation. They agreed to replace the tape with CDR220, now can that also manage the CD changer?
thanks,
Sam
While I'm not a fan of either cassettes or the CDR220, if you did keep the tape deck, you could always get one of these:

Welcome Sam,
I got rid of my cdr 220 because of peeling buttons, but I found a seller on ebay selling new old stock Porsche oem traffic-pro dual gps/cd player units that keep the look of interior stock but would certainly correct the "dated" cassette unit and it was only $300. You may want to look into one. The gps part is actually pretty helpful and I noticed a slight improvement in sound quality once I upgraded the software.
Welcome and as always.... we demand pics!
thanks...negotiations under way, will post result as soon as available, I did look into the Traffic Pro (per ltc) but didn't come up with any retailers that sell it, seems like a good substitute option once I find one.
Sam
OK, I have narrowed my search to these two:
a 2002 C4S with 39k miles and a 2001 Turbo with 51k miles both CPO as pictured below, obviously Turbo's price is $9k higher ... comments much appreciated.
Sam
C4S:
OK! how about $ 46.5 k including a new CDR220, not to forget that during CPO, all brakes & rotors were replaced with 2 rear tires. It even has an installed Valentine radar detector.
Does this sound like a good deal ?
considering all the new items and the V1, I think the price is very good - and you get the piece of mind that comes along with the CPO.
Just my opinion, but the C4S has great power as a DD - I'm not sure I'd want more since I barely can wind it out as it is.
That could easily be my car.
Yes, I left the cassette player in. There are several tapes that I get from conferences that I am unable to attend. So, instead of going to the conferences, I listen to the tapes on my way to work. While driving the C4S. Right. Great plan.
Always interested in what my car would go for if I sold it. Please e-mail me. PM me, or post on the final purchase price. Thanks!
so the Valentine is worth some $$, yes I always wondered about the extra 100 horses with the Turbo, my Cayenne S has 340 hp and is pretty fast even with its massive weight, now compare that to the petite C4S with320 hp, but I am not sure really!? men and the extra hp just an odd temptation...
I will post the final price, my guess is it will be $46.5 k unless something major comes up, I really liked the look of your (my) car posted in your e-album, sharp and sporty.
BTW: what conferences do you attend that still use tapes
Well, I just got a 2003 C4S back in March, fully loaded with everything except heated seats with 30,000 miles for $49.900. It has PSE and black factory rims. I feel like I paid a little high of a price but when you fall in love at first sight...what can you do?!
Where are you buying these cars from, private, non-Porsche dealer or Porsche dealer?
If you negotiate it well, the Turbo should end up around $53k, the C4S should be about $43k.
This is considering that I bought my 2002 C4S 2 years ago with 18k miles for $56k and I just sold my PERFECT CPO'd 2001 Turbo with 27k miles for $57k.
Not odd at all - the Turbo is a wicked car. I looked at one but it started to move the price north (well north) of 50k and my 39 week pregnant wife was becoming less understanding. The torque on the C4s is intoxicating, and it flies totally without drama. I'm not sure how it us in the Cayenne but I easily find myself 60mph+ before I look at the speedo (!!) and hit the binders. Deceptively quick.
Porsche dealer.
so you think 46.5 k is high for the C4S . What is your opinion C4S vs TT ? is there a major suspension difference? soft vs firm?
I can't decide.
LOL!!!
This was back in '02 when I bought the car new, and I also had some conference tapes I still hadn't listened to. Fast forward to '08, it's all CD and DVD now, and they have joined my tapes that I STILL have not listened to nor watched
.
In my :ahem: unbiased opinion, the C4S is the best looking 996
. This has helped it keep it's resale value in the recent past. I don't like the gash on the side of the turbo. I think it ruins the lines.
Not to belittle my car, and more in the interest of helping out a rennlister, but I ALWAYS make low-ball offers. The worst they can do is say no. Even if you end up paying $46.5K, at least you know that that's the lowest they will go and feel good about the deal.
I think the TT is the BEST bang for the buck in the world. The extra 100 BHP in the Turbo is like sex without the condom (if you're the guy) ENOUGH SAID!
MY personal advice and opinion based off of MY experience and my taste.
Plan A:
If you are willing to spend $55k but accept a bit of an older car (going on 8 years old), then that puts you RIGHT in 2001 Turbo territory. It is truly a supercar, don't believe me? Just drive one. If after you drive one, you decide you can live without the amazing power and supercar performance and Turbo Marque, put the condom back on and go to plan B.
Plan B:
Find a 2003 to 2004 CPO C4S with 20k miles give or take. Spend between $45 and $50k and never look back. If you decide you will spend $55k and accept the similar performance to the C4S but want the newer, more saught-after 997, go to plan C (and take your condom along).
Plan C: If you are willing to part with $55 to $60k and want a bit of a newer car, find a 2005 997 Carrera with under $15k miles and never never look back to a 996!!
PS. Mid $40's is WAY too much to spend on a 7 year old C4S, especially one with almost 40k miles. I think the price on those cars is really over inflated.
As for suspension of the C4S vs TT, they are similar. Both are the sport suspension (M030), but tuned for the lower HP and lighter weight of the C4S compared to the TT.
Brakes, interior are the same.
Can you feel the additional HP of the TT? Yes you can, definitely. Can you use the additional HP? Only if you do drag on the streets (crazy thing to do), or go on track ,but not for the spirited driving we all usually do.
The turbo gives you more HP, a true dry sump engine, less prone to RMS, and it has more snob appeal. It is altogether a better car, but not prettier. How much this "upgrade" is worth is subjective. When I bought my C4S new, the price difference was about $30K to the TT ($85K vs $115K). Not worth it to me at that time. It still isn't up to this time. I'm glad I got the C4S. Doing so allowed me to buy the wife a Boxster S.
Great words guys, and thanks.
here is my impression:
the heart says go for the Turbo
the mind says take the C4S
I am not young enough to naturally take the first but not old enough to immediately settle for the second...
I think best thing is to go for 2nd round of test drive...
or maybe we need a "911 Idol" contest,
C4S vs TT ????
Don't forget to check out the Turbo forum over at 6speed, as well. The best Turbo forum on the net, IMO.
http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2
Good point gant...I was going to mention that, but did not want to be black listed on rennlist
BTW, the
Porsche Turbo
is and always will be THE classic Porsche. (flame away)
If you decide you want a C4S, this is a prime example of what you can find...if you're patient.
2002 C4S with only 8k miles for only $49.5k!! You may even be able to negotiate on top of that, who knows.
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...ice=&cardist=0
This car is RIGHT next to my house, I wouldn't mind checking it out for you, if you wanted.
Personally, I would go for the TT. If you're looking for a true "fair weather" car then that means it's definitely not a daily driver. Given that, I'd drive the Turbo for a few years, put less than 10K on it, and trade it in for a 997TT later. Reason; simple economics. The TT will depreciate slower than even a C4S. Just my $.02.
Rotor sends...
