Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Even with two hours of labor (due mostly to rust on my from-Boston originally car) and extra parts cost to replace rusty clamps etc., the entire mod with shipping both ways was under $500.

The standard intake rubber has a resonance rubber tube branching off it, the Schnell intake is a single tube that replaces your standard, replacing this resonance tube with a blanking plate.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can the Schnell CAI $100, save $97 and do the shaving foam cap mod, absolutely no difference in sound
Just like the title says.
Want to start a thread that lists all the mods with a cost under $500
Here is my list:
Smoke side markers $65
Painted brake calipers $300
Interior LED lighting $100
Schnell CAI $100
Tint $240
997 SSK $200
G'
One recent "mod" I did recently was a LED 3rd brake light as the factory one is incandescent, believe it or not.
You can get this in red, smoke, or clear for under $100.
I was really surprised that a $100k 2001 model year car didn't come with them.
Fister D mufflers. Went on a short back roads run with a group last weekend and friends were lining up to run behind me just to hear it!
Even with two hours of labor (due mostly to rust on my from-Boston originally car) and extra parts cost to replace rusty clamps etc., the entire mod with shipping both ways was under $500.
LN Spin-on Oil Filter adapter - $140
Anodized magnetic Oil drain plug - $30
MK-I Cab mod to allow top activity while moving - $0
991 Badging (No Haters) - $120
iPod Touch cable for Becker Radio - $110
+996 for the Fister Ds.
Best bang for the buck mod you can do.
This is how our cars should have sounded from the factory!
After that:
Clear side markers - $40
Paint calipers and hats (Paint and decals) - $50
Becker ipod/touch/iphone connection - $25
GT3 shifter - $300
Haven't done the motor mounts yet, but scheduled for next month.
The standard intake rubber has a resonance rubber tube branching off it, the Schnell intake is a single tube that replaces your standard, replacing this resonance tube with a blanking plate.
Despite claims of performance (I didnt feel any), all it does is remove this resonator tube and enhances the noise. Simply blanking off the resonator tube by loosening it, placing a Gillete shaving foam cap over the airbox, then refitting the intake gives you exactly the same effect for $3.

Window Tint -$140.00
Clear headlights off of eBay -$270 a steal
Clear side markets -$60
Spider LED Tail Lights - $275
Stainless Steel Pedals -$80
Changed out every speaker - $250
Made Sub Box For Behind The Rear Seats With Rockford Amp and Punch 8" Sub - $220
Replaced Door Speakers $75
Replaced Front Amp With Rockford - $110
Rear view camera in license plate frame $75
Brakes Pads and Rotors all around - $290 thanks Pelican Parts
Plasti Dip Black my 19" wheels and tailpipes - $40
Gauge Rings eBay - $37
New Shifter Boot with Silver Trim around it bought it from a member her $40
Re-Dyed all of the leather seats same color, World Interior $45
All done on a budget. I bought a Kenwood DNX6990HD brand new from a guy on eBay $680. Amazing system that sounds unreal.
Sucks, my local shop did it for $160 all in. No rust must be lucky no-one drove the car in the winter it's a 99.
Android stereo for $300 with euro-ebay bracket $150. I can get all OBD2 data, load lap timing apps for android and anything else for android. Like angry birds
Blinking back light $30... my third light blinks 3 times and then goes solid. The company has couple versions I got the wrong one but there is one that if you press break again within 5 seconds the light goes solid instead of blinking again so you don't annoy people in traffic. Lucky no traffic in my city so no-one complained yet.
Smart top - $400 open top with remote.
Racing aluminum pedals $79.
* Radar detector (Beltronics RX65 with SmartCord Live)
* Kahtec Smart Stop third brake light flasher
* LN spin-on filter adapter (purchased today!)
* Raby's IMS Guardian Jr. (purchased today!)
And the best sub-$500 performance mod available for the M96: 4-inch underdrive pulley.
The version of the product wucash wanted is the Blinking Smart Stop Delay Module, which flashes the third brake six times when you first apply the brakes, and then the light stays on as normal. If you brake again within 8 seconds, the flashing behavior is bypassed.
In addition to looking cool, it's amazing how much more attention drivers behind you pay when the third brake light blinks for a second or so. In this age where everyone is texting, applying makeup or shaving, and eating tacos while driving, this is a great safety feature.
I have installed this gadget on every car I've purchased since I learned of its existence...
Basic maintenance like rotors and pads - great idea!
There's a lot you can actually do for 500 - and great ideas so far! I sense weekend project in the near future
Here is one you can do today...
Remove the rear bumperettes.
Scruff them up with a medium sandpaper.
Primer them.
Paint them to closely match the car.
Clear coat them.
Put them back in place and you just made the rear of your P-car look much better.
This is assuming you have the ugly black ones like my 99 had.
The only problem with those cost-effective under $500 mods is they can start to add up!
Some of my favorite "budget" mods:
H&R Sport Suspension Springs [$300]
997 SSK [$170, used]
Guardian Jr. [$275]
Pioneer Radio / Polk speakers audio upgrade [$450]
Ecliptech Progressive Shift Light [$185]
Sprint Booster [$220]
Silicone Intake [$40]
GT3 Alignment [$100]
Color matched bumper plugs ($25)
Window tint [$300]
Some budget mods which I didn't like and reverted back to stock:
Fister mod (I guess I just don't love loud exhausts...)
No smoker kit (The flip-up cover for the 'ashtray' gives a more finished appearance than the useless shallow recess the no smoker kit gives you)
It was a lot more than $100....a lot more. My IMS bearing setup was $99+SH. One of these days I'm going to link my engine repair thread from the Canadian forum so it can be found here too.
Hold on now, the bearing was under $100. You cant count the other stuff I did. BTW, I did steal the idea from your Canadian thread.
How many times do we have to tell you this?
Back to the list. As many have posted, I have to admit the 997 shifter is one of the best things to do. Cant wait to try mine out. Cost $72.00 from a low mileage wrecked 2006.
Yes the hybrid bearing was $99 but how much was the Pelican kit that you used to put the bearing in?
That's what most will do if they grow the ***** to actually join the ranks.

the price has gone up since I had mine done.. in red alcantara.
I really like mine and really can make your car look custom.
no affiliation just a happy customer.
I love the black bumperettes....breaks up the silver a little........
I have to update my picture...the wheels are now anthracite and the pumpkin side markers are gone...
