Starting to get bored with the 1997 C5 Corvette that I presently own, and am entertaining (not 100% set yet) the idea of replacing it next summer with a higher mileage 996.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Still not fast by any means, but quick enough to be fun
Howdy folks,
My name is Mike, 33 years old, information technology guy. Starting to get bored with the 1997 C5 Corvette that I presently own, and am entertaining (not 100% set yet) the idea of replacing it next summer with a higher mileage 996.
Been doing lots of research; don't have any questions on the usual stuff that's been talked about a thousand times. Just thought I would say hello in case I do join the ranks next year. I'll probably mostly be lurking.
Here is a picture of my "fleet" as it presently stands:
-Mike
Nice rides, and welcome. Good luck with your possible purchase, don't let fear mongering affect your decision.
And after all, you can always hit 88MPH and go back to the day you got your Porsche to warn yourself of the possible problem.
Welcome Mike. Nice collection of toys for a 33 yr old. You must either be single or have a great wife.
Can't quite make out the license plate on the car on the left. Does it say "130HP DMC"?
Seriously, do you drive the Delorean much? How reliable is it?
Since you currently have an Elise and a C5, it's pretty obvious that you can appreciate various cars for their specific strengths...which makes me think you'll appreciate the 996. Happy hunting.
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. This definitely seems like a nice place. Not married, but my live-in girlfriend is very understanding
Yeah, I definitely appreciate the different strengths and weaknesses of a variety of cars. I enjoy each of them for different reasons, certainly.
Since you folks asked, regarding the DeLorean:
-During the summer, I drive it ~100 miles a week
-It has great steering feel and an excellent clutch/shifter feel
-VERY comfortable
-I've converted mine to electronic fuel injection using chiefly GM components
-I've also done heads/cams/exhaust. It sounds very good. Still not fast by any means, but quick enough to be fun
The CAN be reliable cars, and mine has been. It is really like any old car - address the age related issues (hoses, brakes, fluids, etc), and the known common issues, and you're good to go.
I'm curious if anyone on here has gone from a C5 'vette to a 996, and how you felt about the decision?
Going from the Vett to 996
Is like going from Harley to
Yamaha road racer
The Porsches will hook you with toque and handling
You'll never go back
The Vett may make you smile but, the 996 will make your pulse race and cause nervous anxiety spasms
^^^ Perfect analogy, Zanzibar."
I used to be a Mopar guy. But, once I bought my first Porsche, it was only a matter of months before I had to get another, and looking for a third now:
I've had two Vettes, a C3 and a C5, and 3 Porsches, a 951, a 964 and a 996.
It was 16 years between when I sold my first Vette and bought my second, which I had for about 6 months before selling.
It was 2 years between when I sold my first Porsche and bought my second, and currently have two in the garage.
Any questions?
^^^ plus 1, please PM me with the results. Make sure you have enough power to get back though, not like the other dude that needs to harness lightning and such, total noob.
Yes, but we figured they'd be funny each time you returned to today. So, ya buying that silver C2 that you messaged the seller about earlier? Looks like a great choice.
If owning a DeLorean has taught me anything, it is how to have a sense of humor
I'm thinking that if I get a decent price for my 'vette next spring that I'll go for a 996; I just keep coming back to reading about them.
Will be looking for a higher mileage car as I'll be looking to spend around 20k. Age/mileage maintenance don't worry me, I've been doing my own work for seven years and know what to expect with an older sports car. Take care of rubber stuff, fluids, and known problem spots then just enjoy the car and don't worry until it breaks.
What I'll be looking for:
-~$20k, 80-100k mileage
-Not silver or white
-Manual transmission is a requirement
-Rag top or coupe doesn't matter
I went from a C6 Corvette to my 996. My Corvette had been modified to about 525 HP which really impacted (for me) daily drivability. I find my 996 to be a better (more liveable) in every respect. No regrets just a superior car. I'm guessing coming from a C5 you'll feel pretty much the same. Prior to the Corvette I'd owned a Honda S2000 for over a decade.
