Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best way' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Test drive and afterwards give the car a thorough' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

For a newer vehicle the local dealer is probably the best way to go.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, sorry for the non-Porsche question, but figured I could get some good input here. Planning to buy the wife a small SUV, Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, 2009+ with less than 50k miles for $10-15k (part of the deal to let me get the 996.) Planning to pay cash and want to forgo the PPI. I'm fairly mechanical and can look for the obvious things. Think this is safe bet?
Thanks,
Chris
Would love a WRX wagon, but can't find a nice unmolested one around here. I'm selling my stick shift Legacy 2.5 GT to get her the SUV because she doesn't want to drive stick. Will check out some of the other Subaru models.
Bad idea unless you are an experienced mechanic with knowledge of that specific model. For a newer vehicle the local dealer is probably the best way to go. They will also know if any recalls or TSBs have been done on the vehicle.
Spend the money.
What about the not so obvious things? Unless you are a good judge of tin or lucky I'd say treat the used SUV purchase like you would a used Porsche Turbo purchase.
Start with a test ride, then a test drive and afterwards give the car a thorough used car check out making sure everything works.
Then arrange for a PPI.
Personally, I would not spend the money on a late-model Toyota or Honda PPI. Both the 2009 Honda CRV and the 2009 Toyota RAV4 have a 3 yr/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a 5 yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. So you have the possibility of an existing factory warranty, and I'll bet an aftermarket warranty would be cheap on these vehicles. Also, on Edmunds.com, both are extremely highly rated for reliability. That being said, I'll bet a PPI on either one of these is $100 or less, so I guess not a big issue either way.
You know I would have to agree as we've been seeing a lot of goofy posts lately(ie: I painted my wheels and now my lug bolts don't match. What should I do?).
Hey alpine...quit being such an A$$...people come here for all sorts of advice especially for their own 996 relying on the good people of this forum who have "been there and done that"...if you don't like the posts don't read them...the subjects are usually self explanatory enough for you to choose to bypass them...
To the OP...sorry to hijack but if Alpine is going to cite my post twice in yours, it deserves a response...
Lol, someone got hurt apparently and didn't realize one of the prerequisites of being on this forum is to have thick skin. There are better forums out there to get more and better responses to painting lug bolts and seeking Honduh advice. Sorry if I hurt you...
