But for day to day silver hides so many little scratches and dust that I have to endure until it's cleaning time.

I was driving into the city today and I ended up in traffic next to a 996 40th Anniversary car. It was the first time I had ever seen one in person. I must say to all of you who own one: you've got a beautiful car. The combination of the color, the wheels and the other 40th Anniversary goodies work really well together. Pictures don't do it justice.
It was very nice!
When I bought mine but before I had actually seen it (I was determined not to have a silver 996 and committed to a repaint) I hate the standard silver.
Upon seeing my 40th, in person I immediately fell in love with the dark silver paint. The only thing that really bugged me was the blingy polished sport wheels which I put in storage and purchased 19" titanium finished BBS types
not a silver fan either.... but when I saw the 40th (old boss bought one new) in person I knew I wanted one!! Finally almost a decade later I got the chance to get one in my price range! I love it truly!
Much like the previous posters I was not inclined to buy a silver car when I was initially shopping for an '02-'04 911. I really wanted a black C4S, until I found the 40AE. Setting aside the standard debate over which car is "better" (C4S vs. 40AE), these cars are just stunning. The wheels are certainly a matter of preference (I love the stock wheels), but the GT Silver exterior color is intoxicating. My wife snickers at me when I find reasons to go out through the garage just to sneak another look at the car. They're just beautiful machines.
I always wanted a silver 911... because I was a fan of the history of German silver cars.
When I found out there was one that only came in that color (plus the goodies that come with it... ) sold. I knew (in my price range) that was the one for me.
I still have a soft spot for Black cars... nothing is nicer when completely detailed, buffed out (Midnight blue is a close second). But for day to day silver hides so many little scratches and dust that I have to endure until it's cleaning time.
