Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I use Castrol 5W-50 in my '03 C4S based on some viscosity breakdown info I'd read at the L N site.
Leading evidence: 'Use castrol 5w-50 in my '03 c4s based' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend choice of oil in regions' (1 discussions). For me, I may switch oil at some point, but so far I've used Mobil 1 0W-40 and change the oil 2x a year.

What I didn't see was a thread specifically dealing with the recommended choice of oil in regions that get real winter weather!!

Now that it is in Pennsylvania with more significant cold weather, should I be changing the choice of oil.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently acquired a '03 C4S from South Carolina. The owner there was running Mobil 1 0W-40.
Now that it is in Pennsylvania with more significant cold weather, should I be changing the choice of oil. And it is necessary enough to do another oil change. Last one was 1000 miles ago.
0W-40 should be fine for the winter. Summer you may want to move to 5W-40/5W-50. When I switched to 5W-40 in July, I notice a good decrease in oil consumption.
Congrats on the new acquisition. I live in the great Northeast and using 0w40; dealer recommended and that works for me. With that said I won't drive the car much in the cold weather once it snows and they salt the roads. However, the car and the 0w40 felt great this morning at 30 degrees!
I saw this today and figured there would be an active oil thread to post it in.
For me, I may switch oil at some point, but so far I've used Mobil 1 0W-40 and change the oil 2x a year. There may be better choices, but I figure factory fill and recommendation can't be a bad choice. Plus it's readily available, and not terribly expensive. I've read high ZDDP content may harm the cats, I don't know what the optimum level is.

You are kidding right? There are soooooo many oil threads on here it will make your head spin like a failed IMS. I have been using DT40.
PS......Go Pack!
No, his MO is to post scary pics and let the lemmings here(of which there are many) come to their own conclusions. A great analogy would a proctologist dive bombing social media with pics of **** cancer without explanation(except to make it known that he, the poster himself, is indeed a proctologist) and letting the majority of viewers come to the conclusion that they will inevitably develop a$$ cancer.
JR, do you even know definitively the oil that was used in your photos(not to mention the oil that was used in this particular car over its lifetime)??? Are you saying this can be expected by using a certain brand/weight of Porsche approved oil...because if so, I'm sure many of us here would love to know which oil you are signaling out here.
What BS...I know for a fact most owners who remove the sump plate of their 996s DO NOT see this type of thing. Halloween is over, keep these scary bullsh*t pics to yourself...
If you have any credibility at all, it is diminished by your incessant scare tactics. You know damn well these photos are NOT the norm, yet you post them in a pathetic attempt to scare owners here and promote your business. This is reprehensible IMHO.
What I didn't see was a thread specifically dealing with the recommended choice of oil in regions that get real winter weather!!
As for the manual, take a look at the scanned page and you will notice it doesn't mention 0W oil anywhere!!!
You may even be dumber than I thought. Jake raby is pretty much the only hope you have for aftermarket support for your flawed platform. If you'd rather have new owners be unaware about the potential failures, then you may not only be dumb, but also an *******.
I use a cocktail of Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5W-40 and Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40.......
Why?
Because I am the self-professed oil expert for my cars......
Really??? Once again with the petty insults, you never have anything of substance to add so like a little kid you resort to name calling. I think most of us on here are smart enough to see who the real dumb ******* is in the room.
Besides, what does any of this have to do with JR posting pics of an engine full of sludge(without explaining the pics) in response to an owner asking what type of oil he should use.
I am still anxiously awaiting JR's explanation of the horror pics he previously posted in this thread...I am sure he simply forgot to add the facts to his post. Facts like: the brand/weight of oil, length it was in the engine, history of the engine, etc. Yeah, I'm sure he just forgot...it's not like he has some type of conflict of interest here where he sells his own oil...Oh, wait...
Please educate us. I, and I'm sure many others on here, would love to know which Porsche approved oil(s) can cause this scenario. Think of it as my way of educating the masses on the BS design of the M96/M97 in an effort to make amends for being an *******...HAHA(it takes a special kind of idiot (such as a resident idiot troll) to think that the issues associated with the 996/997 have been kept quite...I'm still laughing at that one.)
One thing I am sure of, this engine gunk was NOT caused by DT40.
