Suggestion
Above 7700 rpm they inspect cylinder compression, etc.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect cylinder compression, etc' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect cylinder compression, etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. It would be good to inspect inside the oil sump too.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a friend who is looking at a 2003 CS4 (60k/limited service records/4 owners/drives great/IMS Done, PPI to be done in the next few days). He stopped by the house and I plugged the durametric in (readings below). I'm familiar with with the ignition ranges and what they mean to an extent. However, I'm not sure what I would consider a deal breaker or something to really be concerned about. Specifically the range 2 which seems high. Any thoughts/advice would be helpful. He'll ask his indie as well, but thought some of you may have experience or guidance.
Number of ignitions range 1 10361 / 1396.9h
Number of ignitions range 2 1530 / 945.1h
Operating hours counter 1628.8
Vehicle Identification Number
Data version 0041610046203613
Type ID DME control unit __996US03
Order type 996430
Country code C2
Transmission type 66310841
Transmission number G9631
Interior equipment AH
That's a weirdly high number...I believe it works out to about 12-13 seconds worth of range 2 ignitions. Usually people figure out when they've downshifted into the wrong gear and get the clutch back in right away...so someone was driving the car in a way I don't understand.
I agree with Lex...it was a long time ago, and I'd imagine that damage resulting from the type 2 ignitions would have presented by now.
Thanks. I appreciate it. I thought the range 2 was odd as well and I had not see one at this level. The prices is right and he really wants it. hope it turns out ok. Thanks again.
That is really weird.. I am tracking my car hard and sometime have early downshift and I still have ZERO range 2.
But as it was said, it happened a long time ago, if anything was to break it should have by now
Well somebody check my math here: 1530 ignitions/6 cylinders = 255 revolutions / 7200 rpm = .035 minutes so that means at least 2.1 seconds at or above redline? Am I doing this right?
For 7900rpm there is 23700 ignition event's per min. 1530/23700=0,065 min = 3,9s
1530 is total range 2 ignition's, it doesn't mean that those happened all at once.
Range 1 ignitions were 6.7 times range 2 - which works out to nearly 3 minutes bouncing off the rev limiter. Someone drove the hell out of this car early in its life.
The latest issue of Excellence (December) has a good tech article about overrevs. While it is aimed at the 997 it gives info on how Porsche deals with overrevs and warranty coverage. Apparently they are not concerned for overrevs up to range 2, 7700 rpm. Above 7700 rpm they inspect cylinder compression, etc.
Good info.
Guys,
I have an odd question for you. Attached is my Engine module info captured in Durametric by a screenshot showing overrevs. I've owned this car for almost 2 years - it's never been on a track since I owned it and I've also never hit the rev limiter, which makes these #s of overrevs (all the way up into Range 5 very strange to me). What's even stranger is that there are Overrevs in Ranges 1 & 2 logged at a 5,621 hour count which is higher than the 5,579.7 total Operating Hours shown in this same table. Can anyone help explain to me what might be causing this?
I should mention that this car is a supercharged RUF R-Kompressor so I'm sure there was some remapping done when the SC was installed (but that was about 35,000 miles ago when the first owner had it - I'm the 3rd). Never had any issues with it, engine burns about 1 qt of oil every 5,000 miles and has plenty of power.
I'm afraid that with this data logged, which looks to be erroneous, that should anything ever happen to this engine, I'll get no help from Porsche or RUF and I don't drive it like the #s make it look like I do.
Thanks.
OK, some different math examples above on how to calc the duration of these ignition events in seconds... some math suggests 3 ignitions per crank revolution and others say 1 (I think)... how many ignitions does this engine make per crankshaft revolution... if 3 ignitions per revolution, does that mean the crank is a 120 degree crank (360/3)... just trying to bring this all together in my head, thx!
On even fire 4-stroke 6-cyl piston engine, like the m96, there is 3 ignition events per revolution.
Some older v-6 engines are odd fire based, so those will need more crank agle to fire all 6 cyl.
