Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm thinking of replacing the Radio with an aftermarket unit (trashing the DSP unit as well)and of course the cassette tray is useless.

Is there also an easier way to run the wiring harness?

Seems like the shifter would get in the way of using some of those items.

there is no way I could fit the 2 retaining mounts that were used for the top din spot.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2001 996 cabrio has the center console ordered like this:
<top>
1 AC/heater
2 Radio
3 cassette holder
4 DSP unit
<bottom>
I'm thinking of replacing the Radio with an aftermarket unit (trashing the DSP unit as well)and of course the cassette tray is useless.
The final occupants will be AC/heater, aftermarket CD/radio, cup holder and <either an open slot or CD holder>.
<pls don't flame me for the cup holder...I know I should be driving, not drinking...but I'll do a better job of the former if the soda can't isn't propped between my legs.>
Any suggestions for what order works best?
Are there any physical constraints on what can go where? Seems like the shifter would get in the way of using some of those items.
Thanks!!!
Hey I am going to do the same thing! I have seen it with the order being this: cup holder, radio, slot or casette/cd holder and the the ac on the bottom. That is the way it is on the cars with nav I believe. as I remeber with the nav it is 2 din spaces then the cd holder then the ac stuff. I don't know how the cup holder is done with that offhand though, don't remember anyone know? Well I don't have nav anyway but I would like to do the same order to look kewl, hehe thanks.
I think what you are saying is that you want to remove the cassete holder and in it's place install the cupholders? If so the cupholders will not install in that location - only directly under the vents. See my other pictures here. I have the carbon fiber center console which is flat on the bottom already that I am going to put in so I don't think I will have to shell out for that. Thanks for the pics and info though. So all that is left is to rip it apart after getting the pulls, module, trim, and retainer. Thanks again
Ok, so I have ripped the entire thing apart, and I managed to move the wiring harness for the AC control to the bottom and got the proper trim bezel, however it didn't want to fit in there. I shoved the hell out of it and it finally fitted by pressure only, is this how it is supposed to be? Also don't you screw in it or something? there is no way I could fit the 2 retaining mounts that were used for the top din spot. What's up with that? I finally said screw it and put it back where it was. Is there also an easier way to run the wiring harness? I did it on the side and then back in through to the bottom. Thanks, PS I have bloody knuckles ouch!
