I have had no tickets since it was installed about a year ago.

I had used a fuse holder from Valentine that attached to a telephone cord.

I use the remote display, and have hardwired it in.

Does this also require another cord running from the unit?

I had the dealer run a wire for me; it comes out on the right hand side of the left sun visor.

The California Highway Patrol seem to run with their radar on about 25-30% of the time - that helps improve the odds but is certainly no replacement for not paying close attention.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After reading the strong recomendations for this radar detector, I am ready to purchase one. However, before I make the last step I wanted to get a better idea of where the unit will mount and how it will look in my car. Does anyone have any pictures of the V-1 installed in a Porsche?
I have a 2002 C4s.
I understand the unit would mount somewhere near the rear view mirror on the front windshield. Where does it get its power (is there a cord that runs down to the cigarette lighter or to a permanent power source)?
I also have read about the remote display. Does this also require another cord running from the unit? Seems like a lot of loose cords.
I searched the Rennlist board but could not find pictures.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I don't have a photo but mine is mounted to the left of the rear view mirror at the top of the windscreen. I had the dealer run a wire for me; it comes out on the right hand side of the left sun visor.
FYI, I like the V1 on the highway but around town it's useless. It goes off by every BP, Kroger, CVS, Publix, Wall Mart, and other stores. It goes off so many times that I turn it off...

After my last ticket I just got one, I hardwired it in using THESE instructions. Very easy. They're for a Boxster, but work with the 996 as well. He shows it to the right of the rearview mirror, I chose to mount it on the left side. I 've heard of people who screw the mount in, but I thought I'd try it on the windsheild first.
Try running it in Advanced Logic mode to weed out false alarms.
false alarms are the bane of all radar detectors. to me these gismo's give one a sense of false security. use your eyes and save your money for a good attorney when the inevitable ticket occurs!
furthermore, these devices really **** of the traffic cops who will be loath to give you a break when they spot it! my escort is only good as an overpriced paperweight
On the 996, you can run the wire between the windshield and the header , there is plenty of space. I was able to run the wire down to the fuse box with no tools. I poped the cover of the interior light center piece and left extra cable there just in case. Mine is mounted to the passenger side clip for the sunvisor, I used a custom built piece of metal but the suction cups should do. The fuse box on the '02 had an empty socket, so thats where I wire it. No holes, no splices. If you want details, I could take pictures but you need to e mail me, I seldom visit this forum.
Ignacio, you must drive too slow 'cause my V1 has paid for itself at least a dozen times...Maybe if you got rid of the pretender detector?
Prayer of the day:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for Thou blessing O Lord for not needing to buy the apparatus mentioned above in this part of your planet..

Hi J4S,
Here are some pictures of how I mounted the V1. I use the remote display, and have hardwired it in. I picked up the power under the dash somewhere, I can get a picture of that too if you need it.
No loose wires except the when the V1 isn't in the car, but even then I usually just tuck the wire under the headliner. For the picture I didn't tuck it under, so you could see where it is.
The remote display:
The V1 {actual unit is in my winter car}:
Good luck.

No one is saying its a cure all, I got nailed in '00 with laser. I couldnt see thru the hill I was going over and laser is instantaneous, the detector just told me I was getting a ticket. Its just a tool to help you, It works on most jobs, like any other tool, but not every job. Just like my car, I like the best possible tool for the job.Better than no tool at all.
Anyway, I am going of the subject. I hope he got it installed properly. I will take some Pics. this weekend, Too cold to do anything else.
Here is the link to the pictures of how I did it. I'm sure there are lots of other ways.
This link will get you to the Instructions. I had used a fuse holder from Valentine that attached to a telephone cord. These instructions are Poor, since I didn't document the whole thing as I was doing it but it can be of help as to where stuff is going.

My V1 has saved me HUNDREDS of times.
If there are issues with laser use, lidatek makes a solution that apparently works very well.
It always cracks me up when folks who don't use radar detectors discount their efficacy.
Lurker from the 993 board may have somthing to add to this thread.
Placing the remote display in the rear view mirror seems to defeat the purpose of having a remote display in the first place - that is - keeping prying eyes off of your alerting detector primarily at night when the alert can be easily seen by other drivers, including the police.
V1 - hardwired - high on the windshield to the right of the rear view mirrorw/ remote mounted inside the ash tray (with room left over for my phone. Ash tray on a 993 allows eyes to remain forward while checking the display.)Close the ash tray and the remote display is hidden. The detector is not noticable unless you go out of your way to look for it. Therefore, no pissed off cops.
Saved me countless times - V1 sees around curves and over hills, front and back. Back is particularly helpful in a cab as the rear view is not always clear. The California Highway Patrol seem to run with their radar on about 25-30% of the time - that helps improve the odds but is certainly no replacement for not paying close attention.
I have the V1 installed in the rear view mirror with blinder laser jammer. I have a little felt box in the center console. I cant see that thing when I'm driving??? Seriously, on a 996 there is no place else that you can put it. Mine is now fully expossed. I dont care what the cops think, if they want to give you a ticket, youre gonna get one.
DUANE - On the next post... YOU CAN'T JAM LASER, Unless , perhaps you work for the Skunkworks and you drive a Stealth fighter. Dont be fooled...be carefull. If you dont believe me, take 684 North any Saturday morning, between exit 3 and 6, good place to test( Ticket is $ 150)
Is that red and black **** in your last picture part of the k40 system? If so how does it work because I have the same **** on mine and have been wondering what It does? It would be really fun if I actually had a k40 system in my car that just needed to be hooked up. Thanks
-Andrew
That **** in the last pic is the on/off switch. It also controls volume and city/highway sensitivity modes. Do you mean the system is in your car and doesn't work? I bought my car and didn't know I had the system for 2 months! I found it by accident!
Good luck!

How did you find out that it worked? Should I trace the wiring from the switch or should there be a light or something that comes on when I turn the ****? Is the outside ring of the **** the on/off? I am really curious now as to whether I actually have the entire system or just the left over ****.
-Andrew
When turning the ****, you should see led's light up. The usual instalation point in in the speedo cluster. You should also hear audio alerts go off each time you turn the ****.
Another sign to look for are the receivers. I have 3, front and rear radar, one in a tail light and the other in the underside of front air dam. I have laser mounted next to the front license plate.
Let me know if I can answer more of your questions!
