Only advice I can give is what someone gave me when I had my accident (not my fault..rear ender) was to always talk "restoration" rather than "repair"

Also, when the car goes to the shop, should I warn the mechanics not to run the car too long?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last Thurs night, I was driving back from NYC when it started to snow heavily. I was doing 40mph in the right lane when all of a sudden, the rear end let loose and I hit a car in the middle lane. My car did two 360s and I hit the rail guard. Supprisingly, the airbags did not deploy. I came out of the car without a mark, thank God. The LF radiator broke and the temp gauge was blinking. So now the car is dumped in my driveway, awaiting the insurance appraiser. I am interested in getting the aero kit bumper, but was wondering if it would make a difference on performance since I dont have the flared rockers and wing. I have no idea how much damage was caused to the car. Looks like new bumper, hood, fender, litronics, radiator, rim, etc, etc. If anyone has a bumper for sale or advice on the aero bumper, I would appreciate it. I will post pics soon.
Thanks,
Michael
Sorry to hear about that.
What tires were on the car?
I have been driving my C2 in the snow quite a bit this winter without any problems like that. I'm using the Pirelli snowsports.
That sucks Michael. Only advice I can give is what someone gave me when I had my accident (not my fault..rear ender) was to always talk "restoration" rather than "repair"
I don't know how hard the collision was but you might want to consider having the restoration shop make sure the car is still "true"..
Bummer <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />
Thanks guys.
I have the Pirelli PZero tires on the car and no PSM. I have heard that the Pirellis are great on dry roads and suck on wet/icey surfaces.
I am having the insurance appraiser come by this week to evaluate the car. I am going to push for replacement of the fenders, hood, and misc parts. I dont want a "repaired" car. Thanks again.

sorry for your trouble.
your porsche is not the problem--it's the high performance summer tires which have a rubber compound that gets brittle and hard below 40 degrees f. i don't think psm would have helped significantly under those snowy and icy conditions.
you need dedicated snow tires from pirelli or dunlop, preferably on dedicated rims. expensive but worth every dime.
with snow tires you can use your 996 year round.
rear wheel drive and engine in the back are a good combo for snow like the original vw bug
i used to have a ski rack on my 1979 911sc that i drove into the poconos in lots of snowstorms with no problems. also see threads below with videos from pierre in switzerland. real snow tires are the key--we just got spoiled here in the n.e. usa by several mild winters.
until now <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
Michael,
My condolences. I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago, but not as bad. I had trouble stopping from 10 MPH in about 50 ft, I went right under the bumper of an SUV. After that happened, I invested about $1200 in winter wheels and tires, and I have got to tell you, the difference is tremendous. You owe it to your own safety.
Good luck, sorry to hear about that.

go to rennteam and watch the video of the 996 c2 with snow tires in nurburgring! <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" /> it is awesome and will give you an idea what a c2 can do with proper snow tires! <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />
again, sorry about your trouble but glad you're ok! <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />

another example how soft the 996's body panels are...

You were intentionally trying to make the car spin or it just happened?
What did PSM do as it became obvious that the car would spin. Did it try harder or just give up??

I'm really sorry for your news.. but the topic should read: "don't drive your car in snow without snow tires!"
Years ago I used to drive a 944 in Buffalo, NY winters... With cheap snow tires, that car was surprisingly good in the snow. Tires are so much better these days, I think the C2, with engine in the right place
, would be a decent winter driver...
YOU NEEEEEEEED SNOW TIRES!!! my C4 cab is better in the snow than my jeep grand cherokee!!! I drive to the ski slopes with a roof rack and box on top! I have snow chains for the car but have never needed them. This car is amazing in the snow!!!

I felt the PSM cut the engine, but it still lost the rear end. I assume I hit an oil slick which is similar to ice, the PSM blinked but it was too late and I did a 180 ended up facing him on the shoulder...
Porsche along with all the other manufacturers state the traction/stability controls do not defeat law of physics. Especially in something like ice, i don't think they were really made for stopping a spinning car once tires are moving sideways. I also have a Mercedes SLK and I've done donuts in the rain with their ASR system.
I think to the driver, PSM is better as an indicator you are about to slip and to get ready
to countersteer. Don't rely on this too much to save you, as I've read in some posts in the past they also lost it even while using PSM. PSM does work wonders when cornering hard in dry weather.
You are absolutely out of your mind driving the C2 with PZeros in sketchy conditions.
Firstly the Pzeros need to heat up to remain sticky..throw snow into the equation and you may as well have had slicks on your car.
A performance tire differs mainly from snow tires in its inability to clear snow from its treads. It does the exact opposite - it packs up with snow - thus creating a "slick" tire so to speak.
Honestly your crazy - I couldnt imagine even thinking about drivng in the snow, its literally suicide if you dont have snows.

Usually it has been highway conditions in the rain where the back end hydroplanes. I guess the point is that if the tyre isnt in contact with the road then no amount of corner braking will work.

Guys, thanks for the kind words.
It was very stupid of me to drive my Porsche with PZeros in snowy conditions. I was out on a first date with an absolutely gorgeous chick and I didnt think with my head.
Anyway, the insurance appraiser stopped by today and said that I have to have all of the panels up front replaced. Thats good news b/c I didnt want any repairs to the car.
I noticed that the roll bars from the convt top have popped up and are piercing the rear plastic window. I called the dealer and they said that it has to be computer resetted. Now the car is sitting in the snow for the past few days and I know that the rear plastic window will expand amd deform due to the pressure of the roll bars and the snow on top. The car doesn't have any antifreeze b/c radiator is busted. My question is will the engine get damaged while laying in the snow for 1 week w/o antifreeze, and will the PZeros get damaged due to the extreme cold temps? Also, when the car goes to the shop, should I warn the mechanics not to run the car too long?
Thanks again for all your help.
I think your tires will be just fine sitting in the cold - even sub-artic cold won't damage static rubber.
If the car sat for months with no antifreeze I might worry about internal corrosion, but I don't think you have to worry about a week or two...
I would definitely make sure the shop knows about the leak - write "Do Not Run Engine - No antifreeze" in grease marker on the windshield.

JOL, I have a set of Pirelli SnowSport 240. Stock wheels at the front (225/40 tires) and narrower ones at the rear (265/30 tires). This is the setup Porsche recommends.
This setup provides incredible grip on snow! Truly impressive.
