it happened coz i was so tight mirror-to-mirror between a 600SL on my left and a hanging tyre that made the dent on my right side over an open drain (that's what they do here to show they repair tyres, they hang them on the road)..

Suggestion
It appears to be a crack in your bumper, so if you can not leave with it, I would look for a clean used bumper versus a bumper repair.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Life is short, so dont sweat the expense of having it fixed!!
Coming back from working out, on Schaumburg Road near the Barrington Rd intersection, I heard a loud clunk. Take 2 hollow iron pipes and hit them together and you get an idea of the sound. Anyway, I pulled over and saw what happened. Some road debris flew up somehow and hit the front of my bumper. What are my best options short of repainting? Any one you would recommend in the NorthWest Chicago area? Anyone guess on how much it will cost to fix this? Worth claiming on the insurance??? Thanx in advance.

Sorry to see that. It makes you sick to your stomach. Had basically the same thing happen to my cab. But it hit down lower on the driver's racker panel. Made a nice long 3 inch gash. I choose to use the touchup paint instead of repainting.
Eventually the sick feling goes away if that is any comfort.
Thanks Mike. Do all the dealers stock the touchup paint? Also, when I run my hands over, it feels so rough
Yes, the dealer will have the Arctic Silver touch up paint.
Are you in PCA?
There is a concurs school in early March. It's lead by Pay Yanahan who is a genius at these sorts of things. I've seen him work magic on stone chips. I'm not sure about a gash like that, but it might be worth putting tape over it, and having him look at it.

wear your scratched bumper like a badge of honor!
porsches are made to be enjoyed i would find it impossible to keep staring at a perfect specimen in my garage as if it were a museum imo, life's too short to sweat small stuff like scatches or stone chips--just put on a little touch up paint (if you want) and go out and do it all again! carpe diem!
p.s. i'll bet no one even notices the sratch but you--also remember the bumper is a plastic part that can never rust
Mike, I've been meaning to join PCA but just being lazy about it. Guess, now is a good time to join as any. Thanx for the tip.
Ignacio, I see your point but it still sucks to the nth degree
And, it is VERY noticable. But still, I see where you are coming from. This morning is light rain with snow predicted by 4 pm. I would haven't driven the Porsche this morning "under normal circumstances" but I did

you drove your porsche today in part because of the scratch!

I would repaint the bumper. Find a shop which uses Sikkins (they have the best color match) and insist they tint to match. Tell them you don't want any blending into the fenders or the hood. It looks like that damage is low enough, it might be able to be filled in (is it cracked?, looks like it might be) and then blended just into the bumper, then clear over the whole bumper. It can be done.
Even though the car has had some paint work, this doesn't detract from its value.
I got a chip and a dent on the right side over the rear wheel.. it happened coz i was so tight mirror-to-mirror between a 600SL on my left and a hanging tyre that made the dent on my right side over an open drain (that's what they do here to show they repair tyres, they hang them on the road)..
..all that at 180km/hr!
Now that's a dent to be proud of.
Drive her rough, memories last cars dont.

Sorry to see that....Definitely don't touch it up. I got a similar scratch on my 996 bumber and I tried to touch it up....bad move. I ended up having the front bumber repainted.
Chicago996,
I would have the bumper replaced. This should be covered by insurance. Why would you not want to have your car in perfect or near perfect condition?? Life is short, so dont sweat the expense of having it fixed!!
I'm really sorry to hear about your car...that really is a bummer...
We've been talking to www.autovisuals.com about becoming a sponsor. They sell these touch up paint pens. They kind of interesting so I thought I would pass that along to you incase you thought you might try the touch up paint route.
Good Luck with your car!

Whatever route you decide, (insurance repaint makes a lot of sense), the Chicago region concours school is March 9th at 11 am at Napleton Porsche in Westmont.
Chicago region membership chair is Van Miller [email removed]
You'll learn a lot about caring for your car, whetehr you repaint, touch up or wear the scar proudly.
Ok, I took it in to see a detailer my dealer (The Exchange) had recommended. This is what I learned:
1. The bumper is definitely cracked. Not much but the d*mn debris did its thing. Don't do anything since it is plastic. It won't rust. Cost: $0.00.
2. Touch it up and treat it like the beauty mole on Ms. Crawford . It will never be a permanent solution though. It will tear up there again if it gets too hot/cold. Cost: $12.95
3. The bumper, though it is cracked, isn't a goner. One scenario involves the detailer taking the bumper, fixing it "from the back", and repainting it. He is Porsche authorized. Cost: ~ $650
4. Replace the whole bumper. If I go with my stock bumper, cost is ~$1400. If I go with the Aerokit bumper w/spolier, cost is ~$2000. Deductible is $500.
So there you have it. Mike, I am definitely going PCA!
I realize with what all is going on in the world, this is gotta be the piddliest little problem and I feel guilty about even making it sound like a big deal but, all the same, it sucked major-league and I appreciate the encouraging and informative folks of Rennlist. Cheers!
sometimes nothing is the best solution altho the cindy crawford approach also has its appeal
all the other "solutions" are sending good money after bad.

A speedlingerie bra would hide it and protect your bumper from rocks and light bumps. I made a mistake and tapped a wall in a dark parking garage after driving one day with my bra off and I thought about replacing it, however I decided to hold off. Another time the bra saved me from damage when a car two lanes over hit a wooden chair at 60 mph. My bumper took a hit from a piece of the chair leg and the bra only got a rub mark on it and no damage to the bumper.
It appears to be a crack in your bumper, so if you can not leave with it, I would look for a clean used bumper versus a bumper repair. I sold one on ebay for $200.00 that only needed sanding and paint.
See if the insurance will cover replacing the bumper.
Who was the body shop -- Ultimate Paint and Body?
and by the way, welcome to the club. You'll enjoy the people in this region.
M
Hi Mike, Yup, that's the body shop I took it to. Any experiences with them? I've yet to make an appt with the insurance claims people. Good news is that I have applied for PCA membership and waiting to hear back from someone (went thru their website). Looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming events!
