Pop the cables off the ball joints and the rear of the top will lift up far enough so you can clean the window, as you stand next to the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm close to buying a 2000 996 Cab, but I'm concerned that the plastic rear window will seriously impede my ability to drive safely (and to view whether or not there may be an officer of the law somewhere behind me). This is especially a concern for nightime driving, when my current car (Merc E430) gives me outstanding visibilty, even with tint. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Much thanks in advance...

POST 2Original post

Porsche makes a plastic window cleaner "sauce" which you can buy at any dealer. Keeps the plastic as clear as can be. I have a 2000 cab and I use it regularly.

POST 3Original post

I have a Boxster with the same window. It's really not a safety factor at night, since the lights shine thru even when the window clouds. It mostly a pain in the *** because you've got to clean it every month or so. You can put the car away when the window is perfect and come back when it's clouded. My impression is that it's worse when the top is kept down. It's an irritating, stupid cost-saving move that should have been avoided. AS

POST 4Original post

Plexus is the only way to fly on this. Had one of the first Boxsters in the US and left the top down over the hot engine bay regulaly and the only thing that would clean it up was Plexus. I believe www.performanceproducts.com has it.

POST 5Original post

I use the products offered by Porsche and my rear window is clear with no yellow tint. I would strongly recommend applying the treatment at least once every month or so.

POST 6Original post

I have used the Porsche cleaner that came with the car as well as Windex. Both work just fine. The key is cleaning both sides of the window. The easiest way to get to the inside is to open the top just enough so that the rear hatch is all the way back. Lift up on the rearmost portion of the top and you will see that is it is attached in the well to a ball joint with a cable that snaps over the joint. Pop the cables off the ball joints and the rear of the top will lift up far enough so you can clean the window, as you stand next to the car. For what it is worth, when I put my top away (install the hardtop) I place a clean towel between the folds of the window. This keeps them from rubbing together and or sticking to eachother. I agree with other sentiments expressed here. while the window is a PITA, it has not been a safety issue for me at all. It was actually harder for me to get use to trusting the visuals I get in my side mirrors. Besides, things behind you are generally nothing a little bit of throttle can't clear up

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - this is good stuff. I've mostly avoided tickets for the past 16 years by keeping a steady eye on my rearview mirror. Any car with a protrusion on the top (no matter how far back) gets my respect and keeps me slow (lots of ski racks have gotten my adrenaline pumping). So the possibility of distortion in the rear-view image has me concerned enough to wonder if I shouldn't look to replace it with glass. However I've been told it's a VERY expensive option, so if y'all say that these cleaners are good enough for you, then that's good enough for me...

POST 8Original post

ZeeZee, Concerns with tickets. Sounds like you need a V1 to keep the tax collector away.
