Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What's this high pitch fan (?) noise that comes in when i start the car and only lasts for a couple of minutes? It sounds like a kitchen blender sort of! It's nothing like the wing-fan or the front-radiator-fan, what can it be? \\W// 996 C2 99

POST 2Original post

Only happens when cold? Thats an air pump that has something to do with emissions.

POST 3Original post

It could also be a bad fan belt making that noise until it warms up. It can occur not only from misalightment but if it is glazed. You can check the markings on the pulley and or look at the contact side of the belt to see if it's glazed and or shinny. I don't know much about the air pump, but I have heard belts makes that weird noise.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cant be a belt, it sounds like a very fast fan whining. It happens only when cold at startup. And it lasts exactly the same time. Wondering, Loren! Any clue!? Waz

POST 5Original post

You are likely hearing the (electric) air pump. This pump comes on to aid in emissions at startup until the engine (and exhaust gases) reach a certain temperature. It can also sometimes be heard at idle (like at a stoplight). This is normal.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Loren, it is indeed an electric motor and the sound is coming from near the alternator on the left.. Good to know my air pump is working! \\W//

POST 7Original post

The noise seemed limited to MY '99. My '99 did it , my '01 doesn't. It is the air pump.

POST 8Original post

Porsche changed the air pump system in MY00. I think the newer design is quieter than what was used on the MY98 and 99.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess it's pretty cool to hear the sound at startup.. kind of like heating the turbines preparing for an afterburner.. Waz
