This has not happened to me, but I've read of several other 996 owners having their engines replaced under warranty, for things like a faulty RMS.

I was reading a topic on the 993 board, and somebody brought up that their mechanic is very reluctant to repair drivetrains on the 996 when there are possible problems.

Allegedly, the engine is cheaper to replace completely, and also less detective work to find leaks, etc.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey 996ers, I was reading a topic on the 993 board, and somebody brought up that their mechanic is very reluctant to repair drivetrains on the 996 when there are possible problems. Allegedly, the engine is cheaper to replace completely, and also less detective work to find leaks, etc. The question is, how many of you guys have had engine probs under warranty? And also, what was the course of action? This all came up because apparently the 993 engine costs over 25K <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" /> for a new factory piece, compared to around ten for a 996. HAS THIS BEEN AN ISSUE? Did anybody have an oil leak that turned into "hey we'll just put a whole new one in there"? Curious, mostly because of the racing aspects. Will trackers spend more engine dollars on a NA 993 or a NA 996?

POST 2Original post

Your numbers are way off. 996 motors are over 23K. I had a transmission replaced under warranty-that would have cost me over 9K. You've heard the story... wanta play?gotta pay. Thats life in the big city my friend.

POST 3Original post

PCNA policy w/the 996 seems to be that a new engine is not that big of a deal. This has not happened to me, but I've read of several other 996 owners having their engines replaced under warranty, for things like a faulty RMS. If your car is out of warranty of course it would be up to you whether to replace it or not.

POST 4Original post

There are very few (or maybe zero) dealers or independents that have experience rebuilding 996 engines. I think PCNA's policy of replace vs. repair is one of minimizing the chances of repeat failures. As the 996 ages I think there will me more folks looking at and doing actual rebuilds (non-warranty).

POST 5Original post

Dealer cost on a M96 motor is about $8200 . The new policy at Porsche, per Excellence, seems to be replacement of defective motors with new or rebuilt motors. Appears to be a quality assurance move on their part.
