Porsche says the next significant change will come on the next body style, but that will not appear for at least two years.

Suggestion

Having designed for, been in, and driven the 986, 996, 997, Cayenne and Carerra GT, I think that the use of Cayenne telematics and interiors is proper.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2004 Porsche 911 refresh What will it be like? We got a chance to sit down with the Porsche guys to see if we could confirm the rumors of a significant refresh (997) to the current model coming in 2004. Well sorry to break you hearts, but it's not coming. Porsche says the next significant change will come on the next body style, but that will not appear for at least two years. We were also told that the next generation 911 (2005-06) interior will have a very close family resemblance to the Cayenne (Alleluia!). The current dash is a tired design in our eyes, that looks very cheap for a car, of the Porsches stature. The Audi TT has a nicer dash and interior, for goodness sake! Our guess is that many parts in the Cayenne dash/console/navigation will be also used in the next generation

POST 2Original post

"Our guess is that many parts in the Cayenne dash/console/navigation will be also used in the next generation" SO Porsche has not learned from its mistake of raiding the parts bin to increase profits. I would have thought the 996/Boxster front end debate would have cured them. Instead, they will make the 996 look like a Boxster from the outside and a Cayenne from the inside. Makes perfect sense to me, if you want to emulate General Motors. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

POST 3Original post

I'm afraid I must disagree with Laurence. Having designed for, been in, and driven the 986, 996, 997, Cayenne and Carerra GT, I think that the use of Cayenne telematics and interiors is proper. Besides, the PCMII in the 996 is essentially the same as the PCM in the Cayenne. The audio amplifier is the same across all Porsche cars and much of the other telematics in the cabin is as well....most people don't know it or even care when they do know it (speedo clusters, CAN gateways, etc. Having designed for GM as well, I can tell you that even on its worst days, Porsche is still orders of magnitude better than GM on its best days. Enjoy what Porsche is going to be offering between now and 2007; I can assure you that few will be disappointed. Just my 2 cents

POST 4Original post

I'm sorry, I can't take it any more. With all due respect to all the posters, (I appreciate everyone's posts) I must now comment. I can't find anything wrong with the current 996!I loved my '01 and I know I'll love my '03 x-51 that will be here any day now!I love the interior!I didn't mind the similarity of the '99-'01 to the Boxster!Yes I can wait for the 997! This may be due to the fact that I am simple and easily entertained...my first vehicle was a green 68 John Deer(I hated disking and mowing fields).Just bored and ranting... good thread though, Don. I do like updates on upcoming cars.

POST 5Original post

Hey Don... I have read posts from you since the first time I discovered this sight many months ago. Very impressive Porsche history and enthusiasm you have. I put another post on here asking what you just answered by this post. To know that nothing significantly different is going to be only a few months away, I am leaning more and more towards getting the 03 MY, and being able to enjoy the Summer. Thanks.

Farmall, Allis Chamlers, Ford Ferguson, John Deere. But first came a pair of mules pulling a bustin' (turnin'?) never quite got the hang of that. Cotton farming in NE AR. And I'm already on record as saying my 01 C4's interior is in Lexus LS430 class. Sure liked the simplicity of that John Deere, overhauling the engine was a good shade tree afternoon's job. I shudder every time I open the engine bay of the C4. Daze gone by....
