Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Low profile tires do not protect the rim very well and if someone has hit a pothole or some other projection you will end up with a bent wheel....have a friend with an A4S who has had to replace two wheels due to this.....and the problem showed up much like yours....new tires obviously won't fix this....so maybe something to check before you invest.

Suggestion

Tires can also go out-of-round and still check out on a balance machine, so you need to check roundness too.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2001 C4, 18", get a lot of vibration and what almost feels like some hop on front end (seemingly right front area) at above 85mph. Alignment, suspension, wheel balance, tire issue? Typically I have found this to be alignment/wheel related on M3's I owned. Appreciate comments. PS - had been feeling that the car was a bit "bouncy" at 70mph+, so I let a few psi out of fronts down to 35.5 and now the problem is at higher speeds. Hmmm. Recently purchased this vehicle and had not taken it up to higher speeds on a freeway until now.

POST 2Original post

There's a whole series of things to check but first, start with the easy stuff -- the wheels and tyres. Set the pressures where they should be, have a good look at them for defects and then have them re-balanced. S.

POST 3Original post

Check the tire balance first. Does the vibration come through the steering wheel at a particular speed and then stop as you accelerate through? That is certainly a symptom of tire balance. The Conti OE tires have a habit of cupping, that would vibrate. You can hear this at low speeds, lets say a thrummimg. The suspension geometry does promote a bit of jacking motion over certain road irregularities at the speeds you mention, that much may be within normal. Vibration is not, you really do need to start checking things.

POST 4Original post

What tires do you have, and how do you use the car? The Pirellis on my tt developed the same problem after 5 hot laps at a nearby track. Balance and allignment were fine... the heat resulted in belt shift, ruining the tires. The dealer replaced them at no cost (@6500 miles). Tires can also go out-of-round and still check out on a balance machine, so you need to check roundness too. Sounds to me like you'll need 4 new ones. AS
