Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Folks: Hello, and Happy New Year! My otherwise flawless and entirely enjoyable 2002 Carrera coup started making an odd grinding noise only recently in cold weather, since late November in northern New Jersey, and only on a slight incline down my street. Once the car has been brought up to around operating temperature, or if the car is not on even a slight incline, I do not hear this noise. Any ideas? Car has ~ 5,800 miles, changed Mobil-1 at around 2,900. Babied but driven well on the highways, no accidents / missed shifts. Sounds like the transmission to me. I am scheduled to bring it into my dealer (Manhattan Motorcars) next Monday, but thought I'd put my feelers out. Thanks in advance, AHS_996

POST 2Original post

Do you hear this while applying brakes,or interior, exsterior. I am a tech, at a Long Island Dealer.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

CarreraTek - thanks for your response! This happened again today. Sound is heard from the interior, both by driver and passenger. Seems to be coming from underneath the rear "hump" between the back seats, hence my transmission suspicions. No braking is occurring during this slight downhill angle, and the clutch is engaged (out) for this noise to happen. If I step the clutch pedal all the way in (disengage), the noise stops. I am cancelling my service appointment with Manhattan Motorcars for tomorrow due to this snowstorm raging outside, but may go later in the week or next week depending on their availability. Thanks in advance! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

POST 4Original post

I have experienced similar symptoms with my '02 C2 Coupe since new (car is now at around 2500 miles). The "groaning" sound (and feeling) is particularly noticeable when braking from a slow speed, and only in cold weather. It goes away after a minute or two of driving, but is quite noticeable for the first part of every trip. It almost sounds like a brake pad dragging, or friction in the rear diff. Actually, upon reflection, there is another component to the noise - I assume this other component is coming from the serpentine belt, because that part of the groan will rise and fall with engine RPMs for the first few blocks. All sounds are quite noticeable from the interior of the car. - Nick
