Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sometimes when I depress the clutch to start the car there is absolutely nothing happening when I turn the key. If I push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor then it will start with no trouble. We just got back from a 200 mile fun run on the back roads of wine country here in the Fingerlakes of NY. My wife wanted to stop for ice cream, which we did, but when we got back in the car I got the "nuttin' honey" when I turned the key. Tonight was different because for several minutes I got nothing. I actually told my wife we were going to switch seats; I would push the car; she would jump start it. One last turn of the key and bingo the car fired right up. Is there a switch on the clutch pedal or bell housing that could be malfunctioning before I look at the ignition switch?

POST 2Original post

There is a clutch switch, and it sounds like yours is going bad. It's a fairly common failure and it's not an expensive repair.

POST 3Original post

Agreed with Dennis, this DEFINITELY sounds like a clutch switch. Search for Clutch Switch Replacement 996, and you should find everything you ever wanted to know about them. Good Luck and report back, DS

POST 4Original post

Mine gets hard to press down far enough when my floor mats slide forward. So check your floor mats. Also, I think I read in one of the threads that you can adjust the switch so it trips easier. On the other hand, I don't think it is any harder to swap out than a brake switch, which is cheap & easy to do.

POST 5Original post

Crawl under the dash and look at it, I would bet a small adjustment will fix it.

Thanks guys, before I report back is the switch under the dash or by the bell housing? Makes a difference where I start looking. Wayne

POST 8Original post

It's nothing more then a micro switch with a metal lever. Give the lever a small bend so it engages sooner

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

great! I found the switch on Pelican for $34 but not going to find one on Labor Day. Thanks for all the help now to stuff my 66 year old head under the dash and legs over the seat maybe in order to get a look. Better yet call 17 year old grandson who wants to drive the car.

POST 12Original post

I'm only 44 and I HATE getting under the dash.

POST 13Original post

OP, just connect the two leads on the switch to bypass it until your new one gets in.

Got in and out with no problem. I can hear the switch clicking when i activate it by hand. Will do next trip under the dask but don't expect to drive the car until a switch arrives. I did bend it it a hbit back the way it should have been and now you don't have to push the clutch in so far for start. BTW..it started right up.....
