Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I ran 235 in the front and 295 on the rear with no issues.....
Leading evidence: 'Run 235 in the front and 295' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I recommend for a street tire the Michelin PS2 hands down.

I too was thinking of going 245 in the front when it comes time to change tires....this would be on my stock sport design's that IIRC are 18 x 8.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2001 996 C2 Coupe will need tires soon.
What are the handling advantages/disadvantages of installing 225/40/18 fronts vs 235/35/18 and 265/35/18 vs 285/30/18 rears ?
Considering Yokohama Advan Neova's or Michelin PS2's
Any feedback appreciated.
That's a pretty significant difference in size, front to rear. I think the fronts would rub. I have 225 in the front, and have slight rubbing at full lock. The sidewalls are pretty low, so expect a pretty rough ride, especially on the 35/30 series. There will be a small increase in grip, but if the car breaks traction at a higher threshold, expect a harder time to get it back into shape. My rears are 315/35/19 (996T).
The more pad you have down on the surface the more grip you will have. Similar the higher the tire profile, the more tire roll you have which reduces handling. You want to find the perfect match. On the 18 you can run a 235/40/18. On the rear of a 9.5-10.5 you can run a 265-275/35/18 to give you much better traction.
If your talking about compound... Then depends on what you do. For road racing only, the Toyo RA1 or the Nitto NT01 R Compound tires handle amazing with a dialed suspension. Stricly sticky compound and would wear out in about 5K-10K on the street.
If you want a great tire to beat the streets and canyons in, go with a Z rated sticky tire. The lower the number on the tread wear, IE 260 vs 360 the faster it will wear out. I recommend for a street tire the Michelin PS2 hands down. Dunlop, Falken, and Pirelli are good options too.
Any other questions drop me a line.
OK Dan- you say 275 in the rear at the max
Eli- your running 295 in the rear
What size rear wheels are you running
I heard that 285 will fit well on a 10 x 18 rim
235/295 should be a safe fit, 245/315 with the right offset wheels, lots of negative camber and coilovers. I want to try 265 front, I have heard they fit.
I too was thinking of going 245 in the front when it comes time to change tires....this would be on my stock sport design's that IIRC are 18 x 8. I know the tires will fit and perform as i've got 245's on the from of the M3 on a 8' wheel...I guess the concern on the 996 is more tire clearance in the fenderwell????..or have very few people ever tried a 245 front tire.

The '01 has 7.5" front wheels, hence the 225/265 combo.
In '02, fronts were upgraded to 8" width, hence the 235/285 combo.
Question for the experts: Will the stock 7.5" wheel work with the 235's with no clearance issues? If so, matching the 235 with 265's in the rear would help reduce understeer.
Can anyone verify that the Factory Sport Design wheels are indeed 8' fronts? My car is a '99 that was origionally eqipped with Turbo Twists but the previous owner upgraded to Sport Designs.
Andy
Look at the stamp by the valve stem. It will have the offset and the size. FYI...the Sport Design came in 7.5 and 8 so you can verufy by looking at the stamp.
