Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well the good news is that I updated my RMS/IMS/AOS as I was experiencing some seepage at the rear seal. Upon pulling it apart they discovered the IMS seal was failing and leaking into the bell housing.
Luckily there was no engine damage as we caught this early. Bad news I am outside the 10 year window for Porsche to cover any of this for the IMS settlement.
I'm a glass half full kinda guy.
The flange seal leaking means nothing more than just another seal leaking. Nothing to do with the bearing. The class action lawsuit doesn't cover bearing retrofits either so your cupns is completly empty.
My car in-service date is outside the 10 years covered buy the class action - so even if the engine failed I'd be out of luck - I'm glad I was attentive to this leak, That's a full glass IMHO.
You are starting to change the story now. The IMS flange seal leak does not mean the engine is close to granading. As I said before, the lawsuit doesn't cover the bearing change...regardless of being outside of the 10 year window. Missinformation like this create the confusion that we see now days.
I understand people are passionate on this issue, but why so hostile? My indie suggested I may have a claim. He didn't specify the problem was with the flange or the ims bearing.
I've learned something from your post, despite your vitriol, about the difference between the flange leak and the bearing...thanks, I think.
I called the hotline and learned my car was out of date range so any hopes of any reimbursement out the window. I'm glad the have all these issues addressed- although I don't worry about it and drive my car without ims consideration.
The outrage should be over the date limit.
Every IMS is at least a little wet with oil blow-by into the bell housing. If your mechanic thinks this is indicative of immanent failure then FIND A NEW MECHANIC. The fact that your mechanic also misled you concerning any potential financial recovery from Porsche for the (unnecessary) work he was performing is troubling.
I don't read the above comments as vitriol, but simply as an effort to correct the ongoing misinformation as well as giving you a heads up that maybe your current indy ain't your friend.
It was a seal! What 11 year old car on this planet do you expect to not have a seal leak, or hose bust, need some fluids, plus other repairs and maintenance required? Going after the manufacturer, or making a claim that the manufacturer screwed something up after 11 plus years on an engine seal is going no where, no matter what the issue.
Realistically, I know we love our cars and apparently want them to last forever...but they won't. We must accept this fact. Maybe because we love them so much we lose sight of the fact that they are aging. And they will leak from old seals. And they will break and need repairs. I hold nothing but admiration for my 99 Porsche with 126,600 miles, 14 years old. I've never had a better built more reliable vehicle. Every time something on it breaks and I repair it, I marvel at the amazing engineering and quality that Porsche builds into every thing. I do think it is unrealistic to blame a car manufacturer for a leaky oil seal after 11 years. Just my take on this....
Dunno if i agree about the "marvelous engineering" on all parts of the 996 but I will say the new 918 Spyder is indeed marvelous piece of engineering at many levels.
It's unfortunate that so many folks find the value of the century with a sub $20k 996 and then end up paying what I call the "Porsche Tax" when they roll up to their trusted indy and immediately shell out another 3 grand on stuff that ain't broke. Second law of engineering ... IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT!
I the spirit of correcting misinformation;
How is it a fact I mislead and unnecessary work performed? Given the leak I requested he do the AOS,rms and updated bearing be performed while he was in there all before even turning over the keys. Upon completing the work I requested he indicated I may have a claim given the condition of the bearing.
Confusing to say the least. This is what you said - "Well the good news is that I updated my RMS/IMS/AOS as I was experiencing some seepage at the rear seal. Upon pulling it apart they discovered the IMS seal was failing and leaking into the bell housing."
The IMSB
seal
is not the same thing as the IMS
bearing
. The seal was leaking, the IMS bearing did not fail.
Now you say that you "requested" to have the bearing updated. That was your choice and you have not indicated whether your mechanic said it needed to be done or not, or what the condition of the original bearing was.... So we are all on here discussing a seal leak. Many owners update the IMS bearing as a matter of correcting a potential weak point in the engine. But what you said first and what you are saying now is conflicting, thus confusing.
I don't disagree my initial post was poorly structured.
