Her commute is a 3 mile stoplight filled slog, and so I routinely take her C4 out for longer drives "for the health of the car".

I don't mean to say that one should not commute in a 996, rather that having a choice and using the vehicle that seems appropriate for the task is a nice thing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All, My 996 is a daily driver.....and she is subject to about 15 minutes of stop and go traffic every day. Does anyone else subject their ride to this kind of driving? Thoughts? The good thing about a 996 being a daily driver - is that you get to drive it every day Ray

POST 2Original post

Back in Colorado, when my drive to work used to be 15 min, I used to take a longer route (~30 min) through the mountain roads almost everyday just to enjoy the car

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I wish that was possible. I live in Porsche hell. Bad roads, stop lights and stop and go traffic......

POST 4Original post

I use my 996 for most of my commuting, 1 hr+ drive w/ stop and go traffic usually on the return trip. It does great, and in some extremely heavy rain 2 days ago it didn't even melt. Amazing! In fact, the heavy rains cleaned off the accumulated road debris and it looks like I just washed it.

POST 5Original post

99 C2 Manual Daily Driver, rain or shine, 5-7 stops a day around town, spend more time waiting at traffic lights than anything else. It's a car and I use it. Best part is coming out of an office after a job and walking to the car...what a beautiful sight! I try to take it for a hour + long weekend spirited run on the interstate just to clear the pipes. Otherwise, I use it like a delivery vehicle and don't worry. It's a fabulous car!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You guys are making my day!!! Good to know there are others like me that don't have the room for 2 cars, don't want two cars or can't afford two cars, but, want to drive a Porsche. For me, if I want to drive a Porsche, I have to drive it every day.

POST 7Original post

I DD and drive 5 miles to work which is about 20 - 30 minutes! Welcome to Miami.

POST 8Original post

My C4S is my DD, rain or shine (or snow). My commute is only about 3-1/2 miles. No traffic. I do, however, drive it down to the Denver airport on a regular basis. Depending on the time of day, the traffic on I-70 can be horrendous. I typically try to fly out early so I can head down the hill before traffic gets too heavy.

POST 9Original post

DD around Tokyo. About 30 minutes each way total 15kms round trip. I do make sure it gets above 4000 RPM everytime I drive it. Getting about 30L per 100kms around town. Car has as much fun as I do. Love my 996 DD.

POST 10Original post

DD(5 days) 35 to 45 min each way, 1/2 of which is 50 to 65 mph !! I look forward to each drive !!(: at time it rains dog and cats , thats life in central west Fl. paradise !!

POST 11Original post

I'm retired and use the car on a daily basis because it's simply fun to drive. I always volunteer for any grocery store runs, to the post office and of course to the mountains on the weekend. I've had the car for 1 1/2 years and have put 22,000 miles on it with only one out of state drive (Atlanta to Ohio).

POST 12Original post

I admire those of you who have the courage, and it sounds like for some it's a necessity, to drive your Porsche daily including in inclement weather. I've always had the option to take my pickup, and my wife could drive her SUV when there was rainy or snowy day (we live in the Northwest). With two P-cars (Cayman S and Carrera C4) we find it hard to put more than 3,500 miles on each during a year. Her commute is a 3 mile stoplight filled slog, and so I routinely take her C4 out for longer drives "for the health of the car". It helps my state of mind too! When I was working, my commute was 9 miles including some freeway driving and it felt like it was good for the cars mechanically.

POST 13Original post

I have had my 2000 996 C4 for four years and it has always been my daily driver . I think it is silly to have such a nice car and have it sitting in the garage and only take it out on weekends or events . Maybe if I could afford a second car then maybe it would become a garage queen; however, it is a worker just like me I love driving this car and never get tired of the compliments I get from people. I am always looking for ways to improve the performance and also to improve the looks of my 996 People that drive their Hondas during the week and take the Porsche out on weekends are really missing out on some fun drivers. I don't even mind the traffic on the 405, AC humming and Charlie Musselwhite on the CD player

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Larry, If I was not on the other side of the country, I would buy you a beer!! - thanks for the encouraging words.

POST 15Original post

I've had my '04 C4 for a couple of weeks and do half S&G and half local interstate (I do manage to find a few twisties amongst the d@mned boring grid layout of Central IN, though. ). I get the revs up, cruising locally in the 3k's in 3rd/4th around town. I plan on driving rain or shine. One caveat: I travel a lot so it sits for 3-4 days at a time each week. I assume you just get in and, after an appropriate warmup, blow out the cobwebs. Oh, and I'm a new member here. Nice to be here! TC ETA: I know the avatar is inverted. I do plan on fixing that.

The great thing is that there is a vehicle made for every use. A person does not haul gravel and plywood nor transport the whole family around with a Porsche sports car. A person can use the 996 for commuting just fine, but something like a Honda sedan is a better tool in the sense of economy and ease of use for that purpose, especially for boring stop and go trips. I don't mean to say that one should not commute in a 996, rather that having a choice and using the vehicle that seems appropriate for the task is a nice thing. I don't have any problem with those who want to keep their Porsches as garage queens, using them sparingly for more exciting drives than simple commuting. That's their choice. I personally believe in something more in the middle which for me is DD when the weather is good, but using other vehicles as weather, road, and trip conditions and vehicle use necessitate.
