Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If I'm cruising at a set speed and then accelerate fairly quickly and let off the pedal, you can hear it whine/whistle/howel slightly.....it does sound cool, but again, I do not want to take any chances.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All - I have noticed when driving at higher speeds (45-75) that when I let off the gas, I hear a slight whining, whistling type noise for a few seconds as the RPM's come down. If I hit the gas again and then let off, the whining/whistling noise is there again. It sound like it is coming from the rear of the car in the engine compartment. It is there when the top is up or down and it is a tiptronic trans. I really never put much thought into it but figured I may want to see if it is normal or not. It kind of sounds neat...It is very slight, and always there when letting off the pedal. The car runs great, no mechanical issues that I am aware of. Any ideas or concerns? Thanks!!!!!!!! Greg

POST 2Original post

What you are describing sounds like a turbo spooling down! I'm assuming you don't have a turbo though? Is this something that is loud enough that you could get a video recording of? I too have a Tiptronic ('01 C4 Cab). Next time I am out, I will listen for something like that, but it does not sound familiar.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for responding back! Correct, no turbo. I will try and record the sound. It may be a day or so before I can upload it if it records. I would be curious to see if your 996 does it. If I'm cruising at a set speed and then accelerate fairly quickly and let off the pedal, you can hear it whine/whistle/howel slightly.....it does sound cool, but again, I do not want to take any chances. It has been there since I purchased the car in April 2013 and just assumed it was normal.
