from my personal experience and also talking with CMS extensively on the topic at minimum you have to replace the 2nd gear idler and the 1-2 shift selector.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As some of you may know, my 996 Targa with 86k miles is experiencing shifting problems, mainly in first and second. And after bringing him to the dealership for an inspection, the technician narrowed the problem down to the 1st and 2nd gear synchros. To rebuild the transmission at the dealership is roughly 5k +, BUT it does come with a 2 year warranty. Now its between going to the dealership or to any indy shop, which will probably cost me less. Could anyone direct me to a good indy shop out here in the bay area that can perform a good transmission rebuild. I just recently came across Kahler's in Dublin, has anyone heard about them? Thanks

POST 2Original post

I have heard about Kahler's -- used it a couple of times back in '04 -- but know really nothing about it now. I had heard that it had changed hands but have not bothered to try to learn anymore on this. There is another shop in that area, well, over in the Pleasanton area, SAS German Auto: http://www.sasgermanauto.com that was recommended to me but I have never used it. You might call Livermore Porsche and get a quote on a tranny rebuild or if this dealer can't help you where it would recommend you take the tranny. When my Turbo's 6-speed developed a selector shaft seal leak I was told they could fix the leak there -- "rebuild" the tranny -- but the CPO warranty had a new one installed and at no cost to me. Give SharkWerks a call http://www.sharkwerks.com/main.php and call Jerry Woods down in Campbell CA for either a quote or a recommendation where to go.

POST 3Original post

If you are willing to ship, California Motorsports in Lake Havasu, AZ does great work. They were very reasonable when they rebuilt my gear stack, I did the rest of the work myself, but even then it shouldn't be much more for them to take the rest of the trans apart. The VAST majority of work is in the gear stack, pressing the gears off and all (requires a 50 ton press). If you want more details about the rebuild let me know.

POST 5Original post

And please let us know what you get for estimates. From your other thread, I think that there's more than a couple of us with this 1st/2nd synchro issue. If it's under $1K, I might go for it.

POST 6Original post

Hate to burst your bubble but the parts alone are over 1k, not even counting labor... from my personal experience and also talking with CMS extensively on the topic at minimum you have to replace the 2nd gear idler and the 1-2 shift selector. $430 and $510 respectively (their prices to me). The 2nd gear synchro cone ring (different from the synchro itself) is ~$70 and should be replaced as well. In the pictures you can see the wear on the dog teeth that once it starts, gets aggravated by even less than aggressive 1-2 shifts. Unfortunately the dog teeth are integral to 2nd gear idler (ring that's welded on) so the whole gear must be replaced. The 1-2 shift selector is the second picture, and again you see the corresponding wear. Seems to be that everyone bangs from 1-2, but no further because the guys at CMS said they hardly every see the degree of wear typically seen on 1-2 on the higher gears. But wait, it gets better! I can guarantee that once you open the trans up you will see: And find: This is where the fun REALLY begins.....

POST 7Original post

When you change the fluid, you can check the magnet without opening the transmission. You can actually reach it with your finger if you just "have to know". BTW, the trans "expert" said you need an 80 ton press which is total BS. I plan to do mine myself with a 50 ton press when the time comes.

OK -- thanks for the reality check. Maybe I'll set my tolerance level to $2K, but likely closer to $3K, I'm thinking. I'll wait until someone gets it done here in the Bay Area and use that as a datapoint and potential source for service.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10663525

There's really no concrete estimate until the mechanic pops open your trans to see what needs to be replaced. But I was quoted around 2k just for labor, SOO imagine when the parts that need replacement start stacking... Realistically thinking, probably 4-5k...

POST 10Original post

Wait which expert said that?

POST 11Original post

I just lost second gear (broke the weld on the dog ring) and did an extensive search. My best advice is to avoid Vertex and SharkWerks. I'm using BR Racing ( www.brrperformance.com ). They don't do the work themselves, but they use the best and only charge $800 + fluids + shipping. Expect $2000-$3000 for the actual repair.

Just curious, how in the world did you manage to break the dog ring off? Do I dare to even ask haha...
