O2 sensors are a wear item and eventually have to be replaced anyway.

I did notice the TSB regarding false P2096,2098 codes; I will check my VIN to see if it applied to my car (and then check whether it was done if required)

As far as bad gas- I guess not impossible, but three tanks of Shell 93 between the two CEL events, with two of the fill ups being at the usual Shell station I've used since owning it.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Ideally, it's best to replace the same corresponding sensor on the opposite bank the same time as a pair to make sure they measure the o2 level the same wayon both banks.

1) Buy the Durametric cable and software and get the codes, reset the CEL, read the values for the O2 sensors and evaluate the values for each bank pre/post cats.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Greetings all....been lurking on and off for about a year now- purchased my '04 Carrera Cabriolet last August - almost to the day, I guess! After having the local Porsche dealership take care of various minor issues here and there, its time to get my hands dirty and save some $$.
In June, the CEL came on and took it to the dealer to see if it was any thing major. He said was a failing O2 sensor (they're presumably original @ 84K) - P2098 code. Since the car ran fine, and I was pressed for time, I opted to pass on the repair.
2 months and 800 miles later, the CEL is back on. Time to replace the sensor(s) I guess! I've been reading older posts here and elsewhere and I'm a little confused- the only thing I'm positively certain on is that the "bad" sensor is on Bank 2 (P2096 would be for bank 1). I'm a little less certain whether this sensor is pre or post CAT - I think the later from what I've read, but on the dealer invoice for my check engine code service it states "P2098 Bank 2 Front O2 sensor" ......
Front???
Does that mean pre Cat?
Obviously I could replace both on bank 2 to be certain.
That brings me to my next questioin- many have suggested for them to be replaced in
pairs.
Well a pair could be different depending upon ones point of view. Is it the pair on a given bank, like above if I replace the pair on bank 2? or is the pair defined as pair of pre-cat and pair of post cat sensors?
(I think a technical argument could be made in either scenario)
Thanks in advance for some additional insight!
The Bently manual says P2098 is bank 2 UPSTREAM sensor (i.e., precat) due to A/F corrction of downstream closed loop system. Note there is a TSB 2469 that MAY apply in this case which will involve dealer reprogramming the DME. The TSB is available at Renntech.org for members.
Ideally, it's best to replace the same corresponding sensor on the opposite bank the same time as a pair to make sure they measure the o2 level the same wayon both banks. Old sensors may be off a bit...Also, when one side goes especially after some good miles, the other side may not last much longer...
Since you are about to get your hands dirty, here's what I would do:
1) Buy the Durametric cable and software and get the codes, reset the CEL, read the values for the O2 sensors and evaluate the values for each bank pre/post cats. This will give you a baseline for what is happening with the O2 sensors and other engine values.
2) Run a tank of fuel with Techron. Since you ran 800 miles before the CEL came back on, it's possible that a tank of bad gas may be causing the problem.
3) With that said and done, follow Ashai's advice. O2 sensors are a wear item and eventually have to be replaced anyway.
Thanks for the suggestions. I did notice the TSB regarding false P2096,2098 codes; I will check my VIN to see if it applied to my car (and then check whether it was done if required)
The Durametric cable and software is worth considering, it would quickly pay for itself simply by one no longer required dealer visit!

thanks again!
+1 on Joe's suggestion on Durametric. Will make the diagnosis a lot easier and more accurate. If you have an Android phone/device, you can get a bluetooth OBDII dongle for $15 (from Amazon) and get the $5 Torque app from Play Store. It turns out this combo is very potent for diagnosing O2/Cat related issues. Torque supports mode 6 for our car so it can show the health level of each cat seperately in addition to plotting O2 sensor voltages at about 10 samples/second, very high resolution for a scan tool (as opposed to a scope).
