I sure as heck would go that route before I'd go used 991.

It's some kind of reaction to the age old question "What would I drive if I didn't drive a 911?" Personally, I use both a 996 and a 986 as daily's.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know I'm late to the party, but I've been looking at the new 981 Cayman S's a lot recently. I've always been a huge fan of the earlier Caymans, mainly because of their performance, claimed reliability, and mid engine. I've test drove a couple a few years ago, and did a few autocross heats in one that was set-up very nicely. Before buying the 996 I actually was looking for Caymans, along with E46 M3's and Elises. Through a few months of looking, (limited options on Island) It came down to the 996 I currently have. Although a little more of a bargain (initial price) I still feel like I enjoyed driving the Caymans I did in the past much more. The only thing that made that car not a 100% must have was the body styling. I always thought the rear end looked awkward, and the rest of the car had a very subdued bubbly look. After seeing these new Cayman S's I must say that only negative I had for the previous models is squashed. These new 981's are so much better looking! I just hope that the electric steering won't hurt the experience that much for me (I've read it's not as big of a deal as others are making it out to be).
I'm curious how many of you fellow 996 owners are thinking about selling your 996 for one of these? I refuse to buy new cars, espescially an optioned out $80k that will depreciate likely down to $40k in no time. As long as the perfect Exige doesn't pop up, I'd rather wait for one of these to depreciate a little into the range I'd be willing to spend.
I think every 911 driver, no matter which year or model, has the notion of

sitting somewhere in the back of their head. It's some kind of reaction to the age old question "What would I drive if I didn't drive a 911?" Personally, I use both a 996 and a 986 as daily's. But there is no doubt that I'm going to chew up a 987 at some point. It's just the prices remain, well, stubbornly high. I'm actually beginning to wonder if the Cayman isn't the new 993 with regards to pricing.
I know what you're saying. 987 prices have been leveled off for quite some time, while many other models are dipping fast. I do believe though with the new generation finally out, that the 987 prices will soon start to come down considerably. I remember a few years ago thinking "when the Cayman prices come down a little, I'm going to definitely grab one" they never really did, and although tempting the entire package didn't make me say "wow, I'd definitely spend $30-$40k on one of those" there are just so many other great options out there in that range in the used car market.
My guess is not many. The Cayman has closed the already small gap between the 911 more recently. Lighter, nimbler, more balanced, better overall platform, only 25 HP less than a base 911, with a cheaper price tag. Do a few tiny mods and it's going to easily be quicker than a 911 in a straight line, and on a track. The 911 has slowly become more of a Gran Tourer than a true sports car, with exception of the GT3, GT2 etc. I feel like the Cayman gives a closer feel to what people loved about the air cooled 911's. The only owners who are wishing they "stepped up" to a 911 are the people who are
More worried about status. Only reason why a 911 owner looks down on Caymans, Status. I'd say the new Cayman speaks for itself... More of just a different lighter, nimbler, more track friendly P-Car that isn't just a "cheaper" car anymore.
I really like the look of the new Cayman. Although I have never driven one but I bet it will be a lot of fun driving one. There is a guy that comes driving with us with a 2010 Cayman S in Malibu canyons every now and then and he kicks my *** through those canyons every time.
In a heartbeat, if it was not too much more. LOVE the styling and interiors are far better, IMHO. Now that I've got the "Always wanted a 911" out of my system. I sure as heck would go that route before I'd go used 991.
I like the look of the old one. New one looks to much like a Panamera.
I'd love to have one if they didn't keep neutering it. I also just can't justify trading in a better looking C4S for a car with only a tad better performance.
It's an old joke from top gear, Clarkson said that if you had boxster it would be a daily reminder that you can't afford 911. I would always take a few years older 911 over new cayman or boxster.
