Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I don't think the German engineers ever intended a car to set off in 2nd gear.

Can anyone tell me what wisdom the German engineers used when they decided to start in second gear on a performance sports car with an automatic?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I love my 996 with Tiptronic. That being said I am a lazy guy most of the time. I'm getting tired of downshifting to 1st all the time to take off from a stop. I could just take off in second but it feels like I am pulling my boat. Can anyone tell me what wisdom the German engineers used when they decided to start in second gear on a performance sports car with an automatic? Most of all, can anyone tell me if there is a way to get the car to start out in first gear all the time? I know I could buy a 6speed but like I said I'm a lazy guy most of the time. Does anyone know how to make a 5speed tip a 5 speed and not a 4?
The logic they used is that during the regular daily driving second gear is perfectly adequate for starting and it saves gas. Also, you don't have to manually shift it down to get the transmission to start in first. Hit the gas quickly when you are about to pull away from the light, the car will start in first.
I am not sure what year is your car, but 2002+ tiptronic transmissions are from the TT 996 and have 250 shift programs. 1999-2001 cars have only five shift programs. My 2002 tiptronic is extremely responsive, quick tap on the gas at stoplight and it goes in first gear.
I think what the last poster is saying. Drive it like you stole it and get your right foot down quick as you start off. These exotic racing cars were not meant to be mollycoddled. Don't try and save gas. Not in these cars. Theres no logic in that statement taking off in second gear bollux. Drive it as it was meant to be driven. I don't think the German engineers ever intended a car to set off in 2nd gear. Starting off uphill... NO WAY and the same applies for starting on the flat or down hill. What I think is you are not driving it (as you start off) as it was meant to be driven.
