Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Of course, many like to see what the cars are selling for (actual sales, not listed prices). I troll eBay a lot, just out of curiosity.
The VAST majority of car listings expire with "Reserve not met."
Here's one about to end in 2 hours, no reserve. Unless there's a sudden price bump at the end, looks like a great value for the current bidder. Leaves plenty of budgetary room to upgrade IMSB, RMS, etc.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-...exp=true#v4-47
Just thought you guys would find this one of interest.
Good price.
For reference here is another one that recently sold near me.
00 black cab, 6spd, grey interior
hardtop included
pretty base car, no real options
73k miles
IMS/Clutch/AOS/RMS all done
new tires
Upgraded stereo (Focal speakers, kenwood headunit)
Had some custom speaker covers added to door panels since they originally had map pockets. Probably could have used a pair of grey door panels with stock speaker grilles in them to replace (about $500 on ebay)
Sold for 15k
that is nuts ! at that price, it is the disposable porsche
especially as most of them really are trouble free ... the IMS story has really killed the value and tainted the brand.
With all due respects this is possibly a core car
Can everybody help me list
The typical needs
1. Clutch
2. Tires
3. Ims/rms
4. Suspension
5. Water pump
6. AOS
7. What else ???
The reason there are so few manual transmission 996s is that the American driving population vastly prefers automatic transmissions. Standard transmissions are cheaper than automatics, not the opposite. In reality (NOT in sports car forums on the Internet), nobody wants a stick shift.
According to Edmunds.com, the number of manual transmission cars sold in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2012 nearly doubled to 6.5%, the highest number sold since 2006, which is a depressingly low number.
While there are plenty of car enthusiasts who prefer standard transmissions (yours truly included), 95% of Americans prefer automatics; thus, I don't agree that a 996 with a stick is going to fetch an enormous premium over a Tip.
Cars that sell for a higher price - manual or auto - are the result of sellers who are willing to wait for the right buyer.
Right now, 996 sellers are seeing the car values drop and are dumping the cars before the prices get worse. Unfortunately, this only exacerbates the 996's plummeting depreciation...as the prices drop, more sellers will be motivated to dump their cars, which will drive down the prices, which will motivate still more people to sell their cars...and so on.
I think the 996 market is similar to the corvette market when talking about manual vs automatic transmissions. When the cars were new older people tended to buy them because older people could afford them. Older people, as a whole, tend to go for automatic transmissions. In the 10-15 year old used market the dynamic changes. You have a lot of people shopping for the cars that are younger and prefer manual transmissions. This makes the manual cars more expensive than the automatics as a result. Not vastly more expensive but a definite difference.
Any way you look at it, Tip or stick, I think 14K is an amazingly low price for a car in the purported condition in that listing. Pretty much anything else I have seen in that range has some significant issue, such as "needs engine" or "accident damage is repairable".
while I agree that the vast majority (99%+) of drivers want an automatic transmission, I don't believe that logic applies to a Porsche 911 purchase. Since the 911 is a relatively specialized car with limited practicality, I think most buyers are enthusiasts who want a manual, not a sluggish tiptronic.
as a sidenote, my practically perfect silver 6spd 99 996 with 89k miles sat on autotrader at $14,9k with only one interested party in 2 months. I've decided not to sell it b/c it's in excellent condition and I can't justify the drop in value; might as well keep it and enjoy driving it!!
The fact that the new GT3 and Turbos will not be offered with a standard transmission to me indicates that Porsche does not feel that the majority of buyers are "enthusiasts who want a manual."
I think the "all car enthusiasts really want a stick" is a myth. It's one of those things that people say even though it's not grounded in reality in any way - sort of like people who say they don't change their own oil because "cars are all computerized now - it's not like it was in the old days when you could do things yourself." That's just a cop-out from someone trying to feel better about themselves and the fact they'd rather drive to Jiffy Lube than get their hands dirty doing it themselves...
No, my rationale is, "...it's not like it was in the old days when you could just dump the old oil down the storm drain, and didn't have to find enough old milk jugs so you could take it to the local car parts store."
Are you sure you are talking about the 911 and not a Lambo or a Ferrari 458 or something???
Eh, sluggish? Guess you haven't mastered sliding the lever over to the "M" side.
You can't compare an automatic to a 6 speed manual change 996. So the posting has no relevance what so ever to the price of our manual transmission cars.
I think there should be a clear distinction made whenever someone talks about an "auto", between the traditional automatic and the newer dual clutch systems. Clearly apples to oranges..
Yes I do, unless I have a good reason not too such as the add doesn't match the condition of the car in the pictures. Also, that why I don't pay for it untill I see and test driventhe car. Assuming the worst will not get you anything online.
If more people assumed the worst when performing online transactions, Chris Hansen wouldn't have had a job. "Hmm, maybe this 12-year-old who seems really interested in hooking up with my 40-year-old fat a$$ isn't
exactly
who they say..."
He's right. The NA 996 model is so beaten up right now its depressing (unless your buying). On the other hand, it will cause many potential buyers to move on to a TT or 997. If you own a NA 996, better just keep it or be prepared to take a hit worse than the dot.com stockholders in the 90's.
Well, yes, that's my point completely.... Someone bought what appears to be a solid 911, albeit a lower end model, for only $14k. Typically, at that price level there are either 250k miles on the odo, or there is some sort of major flaw.
??? If something that isn't worth a whole lot to start with drops in value, it's impossible to have a huge loss.
I am in the auto wholesale business and specialize in Porsches.
Manual transmission 911's are worth more than their tiptronic counterpart every time, no exceptions
. In 964's and 993's, the tiptronic can hurt the value up to $5k, and on 996's and 997's the tips are generally worth $2k -$3k less than what the same car with a stick is worth.
The only exception would be the Porsche Cayenne (which came in manual), and one could debate that a base Boxster in a tip is worth just as much as the 5spd.
You are correct about cars like late model Honda Accords, Carmys, Civics, etc (read: regular cars), they are worth less in manual trim because the majority of buyers do not fancy a manual transmission.
Agreed. Porsche 996 Turbos are one of the best values in the used Porsche market. You could get a well sorted 2001 with some miles in the mid 30's, and IMHO these cars will hold their values in the low 30's upper 20's for a while, even with higher miles.
The 2002 - 2004 996's along with the C4S are holding pretty strong, but it seems as if the floor has fallen out on 1999 to 2001's unless they have exceptionally low miles. With early 997's dropping in value, I can not see C2 / C4 996's going up anytime soon if ever. The Porsche 996.2 is a tremendous value for the used sports car market in the $25k range, high mileage examples are available in the high teens.
Here are some recent numbers in case you wanted to see (all data is for C2 coupe), keep in mind some of these cars may be salvage, or sold "red light as is", or just plain old pieces of garbage. I sorted it lowest mileage on top, to highest mileage on bottom.
