Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'd print up the picture and mail it to the shop, and request they post it somewhere in the shop as a reminder to do a tool-check when they're buttoning up a job...

I make it a habit to inspect under the hood before I drive away and sure enough there was a new water pump but one of the WP bolts was not even threaded in at all.

Along those lines, do you suppose there are any nautical puns left that have not been used for boat names?

At least you have confirmed that your shop uses quality tools.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

About 300 miles ago I had Marie in the shop to fix my starter issue; gave her a bath today and was walking up the driveway and spotted something red hanging down from the exhaust system. Crawled under there and (should have taken a picture first but I didn't) and removed this from between the pipes.

What would you do? So far no obvious ill effects.
Nothing/enjoy free screwdriver?
Call shop and complain?
Call shop and insist they give the exhaust system a once over?
Something else?
Learn to do your own repairs? Just kidding.
Similar thing just happened last week. One of our Dodge Ram government trucks was in Dealer shop for warranty work. Water pump replacement.
After they called and said it was ready, went to get it. I make it a habit to inspect under the hood before I drive away and sure enough there was a new water pump but one of the WP bolts was not even threaded in at all. It was just stuck in the hole. Pulled it out with my fingers.
Showed it to a Tech and they couldnt explain how they forgot it. Just tightened it up for us and we left. This was a Dodge dealer mind you.

MDs have left tools and much worse in our bodies, and they charge $1000s to remove them. Call Marie and tell him you found where he left his Snap-On screwdriver.
Take it back, give the mechanic some light ribbing, hand him his tool and thank him. It builds a rapore that you may need the next time you are in a jam.
Thats a $ 40.00 screwdriver and the handle can be replaced.
Scrape off any stuck plastic and that's it. I have a small collection of tools that I found in project cars and cars that I was taking parts from at the wreckers.
I was at a car show recently, and another Porsche owner asked me what my car's name was. They seemed to be shocked that I didn't have one (seems silly to me). Is it really that common for people to name their cars?
Along those lines, do you suppose there are any nautical puns left that have not been used for boat names? I live by a harbor, and the so-called "clever" boat names all seem so tired to me.
