If welded Im sure it was done before the tube was filled with oil.

could set you up with a replacement snap ring, or even repair/rebuild the shock for you.

For example, you could dump the ROW M030 springs and replace with H&R Sport springs to get a bit more lowering/stiffness and have the shocks tuned for those springs and the type of driving you do...

I don't see the snap ring as a separate Porsche part, but Bilstein uses similar snap rings on many of their aftermarket adjustable height and racing shocks as well.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is the strut in the attached picture repairable?
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7404/9...a4470bcb_b.jpg
With approximately 15K miles on my ROW M030 suspension, the rear right side strut failed on me last night. I pulled the wheel off to find that the 'ring' that the coil sits on became unseated and slid down the shaft of the strut.
If so, I'll pull it myself and get it fixed up. If not, then I'll hobble down the road to my mechanic and have him replace either:
- the rear ROW M030 struts; or
- all four corners with some other struts... suggestions are appreciated (something like PSS10s are out of my price point right now)
Thanks!
Joe
I never noticed before but is this coil spring support welded to the tube or does it have a ledge that supports it? If welded Im sure it was done before the tube was filled with oil. Shouldnt it be covered under warranty?
This is another view of how it should look, correct? Either way, you still have to remove it for repair if thats even possible. Can you take it off and disassemble for better inspection (if you have the tools of course)?
The rear struts have the lower spring plate (12) supported by a snap ring (13). I've only worked on non-M030 rear struts, but looking at the technical manual it looks like the M030 struts use the same snap ring and I think I can make out a snap ring groove in your picture, though it's a bit low resolution.
My guess is either the snap ring was not seated correctly or it failed. Should be repairable with a new snap ring once there is no spring tension if the groove is still in good shape.
In addition to improper seating the snap ring may have been installed upside down. Most square cross section snap rings have a slightly rounded edge and a sharp edge. In the above pic the sharp edge (if it has one) should be facing towards the bottom to get a better "bite" in the groove.
Doesnt the strut assemble from the top? Why would the snap ring even be removed for assembly? Ive never taken one apart so not sure but supposedly this diagram is of a ROW type assembly. Even the new one shows the snap ring allready in place. Is it possible the ring could have broken. I cant see it in his photo. Is the snap ring available seperate?
My M030 RoW kit (from Suncoast) came with the snap rings preassembled to the struts in their grooves. No action needed by me. The rest of each strut was built up starting with the spacer (part 12 in the diagram, or the silver washer-like piece in KrazyK's photo on the right) on up.
Took a picture of the other rear strut, pfbz is correct, there is a snap ring below the plate (felt the gap between the ring ends to be sure).

That gives me hope that this can be rebuilt. It is outside of warranty as I've had the suspension for 5 years now, and Bilstein hasn't gotten back to me yet.
pfbz... I don't suppose you have part numbers for #12 and #13?
Appreciate the discussion...
I don't see the snap ring as a separate Porsche part, but Bilstein uses similar snap rings on many of their aftermarket adjustable height and racing shocks as well.
I'm sure
Bilstein Service
could set you up with a replacement snap ring, or even repair/rebuild the shock for you.
Also, if you google 'replace bilstein snap ring' you'll see several race shops selling them, though you'll need to check if they are all the same size. About $1 each (eg:
http://www.colemanracing.com/Snap-Ri...ock-P4539.aspx
)
Trying to track down the #s, I went and had another look at the strut. Fount the ring below the plate... BUT...
Feeling the rounded bottom edge of the groove (compared to the sharp top edge), I have serious reservations of a new ring holding under load. If I sent it to Bilstein, I'm assuming they'd have to replace the tube. Should I get both sides rebuilt? If that's the case, maybe I'm better off spending a little more money and just get two new struts.
Looks like Bilstein also cuts snap ring grooves into shock bodies for $10 (presumably only if you getting the $85 strut rebuild?)
I'd send both rears to Bilstein for evaluation/rebuild and have them also evaluate the snap ring groove for you. If they had to cut another groove lower and add a spacer, still sounds like a good solution. For probably less than $200 you'll have a pair of freshly rebuild bilsteins, and your not going to get anything else close to their quality for even double the price.
But before I did any of that, I'd probably try to just source a fresh $1 snap ring and see how well it sits in the groove.
Just tracked down the part number for the strut. 996.333.051.13
Pelican Parts has it listed as 996.333.051.45, listed for $577 EACH!!!
Suggestions for a 02 C2? I can get a full ROW M030 kit from SunCoast for $1095, or maybe Bilstein Sports all around for $866?
+1
If you do decide to source new rear struts, you can do much better than the $557 list price. I've used both Sonnen Porsche's (California) and Suncoast Automotive's (Florida) online parts departments. Others swear by Sunset Porsche (Oregon). A quick price check at Sonnen showed the part # you've shown at around $440.
Bilstein will also do custom valving for just a bit more than a standard rebuild.
For example, you could dump the ROW M030 springs and replace with H&R Sport springs to get a bit more lowering/stiffness and have the shocks tuned for those springs and the type of driving you do...
IMHO, that would be hot setup. Multi-adjustable coil-overs can be fantastic
if
you have the time, the skill and/or the shop to dial them in. Setting up ride height, corner balance, low and high speed compression damping and rebound damping is definitely not
easy
. Often a very well tuned non-externally-adjustable setup will give better results to the driver who first can't really identify the slight shortcomings in handling let alone know which of the 16 different shock adjustments, or roll bar adjustments, or alignment adjustments might help the perceived issue..
Update.
- Pulled the strut and found the problem. The bottom plate was installed upside down. There is a groove in the plate that fits over the snap ring to hold it in place. Without this extra integrity, the snap ring popped out. Checked the other side and same issue... so I pulled that too.
- Went to visit my acquaintenace/mechanic who installed the suspension a few years ago and pointed out his faux pas (with some HUGE finger wagging). After several apologies for a stupid mistake, we decided to spot weld the bottom plate and clip to the strut... a one-day free turn-around, compared to several hundred dollars and who knows how long for a Bilstein rebuild.
- Installed the struts back in the car and she's running like a champ!
