Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I get an awful metallic rattle clunk sound coming from the front, I replaced the droplinks which were knackered anyway, but still no cure. It's a very heavy rattle sound that as soon as you hit a bump makes a proper rattle , almost like you've left a toolbox open in the boot and all the sockets are loose. I've gone around witha a heavy pry bar around all the bushes and arms and I just can't find anything loose enough that would justify such a rattle!

POST 2Original post

Did you check the frunk? Pull your spare out and check the tool caddy nestled in the spare. Leave everything out and go for a bumpy ride.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yup deffo a mechanical issue. Was just going through the cars paperwork and spotted on the last service it was noted that - Outer tie rod bearings have slight play. Would this cause the issue?

POST 4Original post

I guess they could be that noisy. If its the tie rod ends you better change them very soon, before they fail.

POST 5Original post

Search is your friend. This has been posted many many times. Replace both sides inner and outer tie rod ends. The amount of play means nothing. Can also be your control arms, which are much more difficult & expensive, and less likely but you never state year, model or mileage so hard to judge.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Replacing Tie rods didn't do much. Its a 996 3.6 2004

POST 8Original post

I had the same thing and it was an upper strut mount. Easy way to check is by jacking up the front end and comparing how the strut mounts look from side to side looking from the underside where the strut rod goes into the mount. If one is bad, you will see rubber sagging. A good one will have the gold color washer just about tight against the mount.
