Very few used cars fall into "excellent", and I certainly wouldn't assume that the above car, even as nice as it sounds, doesn't have a few cosmetic or mechanical flaws.

Suggestion
If it is a very clean car, no accident/repair history, no current mechanical issues, no deferred maintenance, not salvage titled, not overly mucked with, it's the version you want, etc.
Leading evidence: 'Use cars fall into "excellent", and i certainly wouldn't assume' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'plus if its been done' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean car, no accident/' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Its probably a plus if its been done but does not effect the price of the 996 (even though the ones that have been done may sell before those that haven't) ....

I work with a wholesaler friend of mine and $30k for a 2004 C4S with a clean history is low, and I agree with Ralph that I would want a real good PPI done before buying that car.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If you guys are anything like we are on the 928 board, this could get interesting - hope not, though. My friend is looking at a 04 C4S in beautiful shape; dark meteor metallic gray, black leather interior, 38K miles, 6 spd; very nice after market wheels. He can get it for $30K. Ni IMS/RMS remediation service history (presumed not done, but is that an issue with the 04's?)
Good buy?
The IMS doesn't even come into the equation. Its probably a plus if its been done but does not effect the price of the 996 (even though the ones that have been done may sell before those that haven't) .... That's a very good price for the car. Actually it's toooo low and worth a closer looking into as too WHY...
The car is probably worth more but unfortunately wont sell for more. If they are asking 30K they may take much less. Would you like me to evaluate the car in person so I can nit-pick it down to $25K?
Any pics or link to post?
Good buy.
As far as the IMS. It is an issue with any M96 engine but doesn't hurt value beyond the already trashed 996 resale in a lower mileage car. IMO anyway
$30k is a fair price, but only because it's an '04 with super low millage. If your buddy is willing to go 1 year older C4S prices are down in the 20s. Most banks lend out to 10 years. What that means is by the end of next year we will begin to see the full and final price capitulation of the entier 996 line ... and the beginning of the death spiral for the 997 prices
A 2004 C4S with 38k miles for $30k? That sounds awfully low... I have offers on my mint, but not for sale, 2004 C4S with 34k miles (but I have X51 and sport exhaust) for $48k.
Something HAS to be wrong with that car to sell that low...
I'm not sure where you guys are looking at prices but 30k is right on, maybe a hair low for the mileage but certainly not 'flag raising' by any means.
If you are getting 48k offers on a C4S you are mad not to take those, X51 or not, that's at least 10k over current pricing.
The more I read this forum the more I realize how out of touch many people are on pricing, these cars are simply not worth that much.
I think the prices of these cars are like illiquid small cap stocks - very wide bid/ask.
There are people who would like to sell, and then there are people who NEED to sell. This C4S seems like a very good price, and the seller probably needs to sell the car.
Btw, the same applies to buyers - if a guy wants to buy a car NOW - he'd probably pay up vs. waiting for the right car/seller to come along.

The market is crazy right now; On the buying side there are luxury buyers at the upper end and fixed budget buyers at the lower end. On the selling side, there are the enthusiasts at the upper end and motivated sellers at the lower end. And, of course, lots of people in-between.
This is why a car owned by an enthusiast might be priced $10K over asking price from a motivated seller. The same thing applies to buyers; a luxury buyer might pay $10K more for roughly the same car as compared to what a budget buyer would pay.
This is typical of selling a luxury product in a buyer's market. So, even though the general 996 pricing trend is downward, if you're a seller and want top dollar, the key is to find the right buyer.
That is a HUGE offer for an '04 C4S, regardless of miles or options... You could easily buy a super nice 996 MKII turbo for that price... Everything the C4S is plus 100HP and a Metzger engine? (o.k., +75HP if you have X51)
Great colors, great year, the C4S's are quite popular.
If it is a very clean car, no accident/repair history, no current mechanical issues, no deferred maintenance, not salvage titled, not overly mucked with, it's the version you want, etc. than that sounds like a very decent price... Not a give-away by any means, but priced to sell.
But if any one of those things doesn't check out it can greatly affect value.
I wouldn't sweat the IMS as long as there are no current signs of an issue...
Put on a magnetic chip detector (Guardian Jr.) for $250 and just replace the IMSB next time you do a clutch (or in the unlikely case your Guardian Jr. detects possible failure)
I work with a wholesaler friend of mine and $30k for a 2004 C4S with a clean history is low, and I agree with Ralph that I would want a real good PPI done before buying that car. Prices can fluctuate quite a bit on these cars depending on mileage, condition, and options, so without knowing exactly how this car shows, it is a hard to be exact.
Someone picked up a '09 997.2 C2 with good options for $48K. It is in a thread on the 997 board. Not sure your car would ever make it on my list with that budget.
OP,
The seller is pricing it perhaps a bit aggressively today to move the car but its not unheard of. Get a solid PPI and enjoy it this year. You can probably sell it next year and get all of your money out of it.
Actually, raising the condition to "Excellent" moves the sale price more than "a bit more," but actually over $4,300 more to $34,500. That seems about the right price for the car as described.
You also made an interesting decision to focus on the website's projected 'Sale' price, rather than the suggested 'List' price. The 'List' price according to this site for the car in 'Good' condition projects that this specific '04 C4S is priced $2,500 low.
So either way,
according to the site you reference
the specific car being discussed in this thread is priced between $2.5K and 4.5K low.
The OP asked was it a "good buy" not what price to list it at. As has been stated, $30k is in fact a good buy, but only due to the millage and condition. For the record, nobody's car is in "excellent" condition on resale. The price already accounts for millage, "excellent" condition would imply virtually showroom new with little to no wear on the interior, new tires, etc. This is never the case.
I would simply add that there will be more depreciation with an '04 for at least one more year. Again, if the OP's buddy is willing to go out another year then his price drops
WELL BELOW
$30k.
I'm personally considering a '01 TT
listed
for $36k (@ 44k miles) The car is a hot mess with over $10k in track mods including a stage 5 clutch.
I didn't make any 'interesting decisions', that's the way truecar presents the info.
And I agree with LV above... Very few used cars fall into "excellent", and I certainly wouldn't assume that the above car, even as nice as it sounds, doesn't have a few cosmetic or mechanical flaws. Heck, just not having the IMSB retrofit alone puts it out of 'Excellent' for me.
So I reiterate what I said about the price...
You compared different numbers - list price vs. sale price.
The list price of the original post car is $30K. Clear book "nailed" the proper list price as $32,562. As several of us have stated the list, or asking price for the car originally described is very low. According to the site you posted it is precisely $2.5K low.
