Otherwise I wouldn't worry to much about it if you're okay with the actual price of the car being $45.5k (price plus repair cost).

The independent dealer is willing to pay for repair of the valve leak, but won't pay for the RMS dampness b/c the Porsche dealer doing the PPI says it isn't yet a critical item.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PPI on the '02 Targa (30K miles, 1 owner) I've been looking at revealed an oil leak at a valve and RMS dampness (not yet a leak). The RMS dampness may be due to the car only gaining 150 miles since bought at auction last Nov. and the seal drying out. The independent dealer is willing to pay for repair of the valve leak, but won't pay for the RMS dampness b/c the Porsche dealer doing the PPI says it isn't yet a critical item. I have a decision to make. I've made a good deal on purchase price - $44.5 and the car is otherwise excellent. Should I go ahead with the knowledge that I may have another $1K repair down the road once a RMS leak does finally develop? Thanks much for all replies! Piccia

POST 2Original post

I would challenge them to cover the RMS if it leaks within the first 90 days of ownership. If a cars been sitting long enough and you start driving it daily it's going to leak pretty quickly if it's going to leak at all. If something fails within 90 days I'd argue that it was a critical item and they didn't correctly recognize it's condition at the time. Worth a try.... Otherwise I wouldn't worry to much about it if you're okay with the actual price of the car being $45.5k (price plus repair cost). Shawn

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah the heck with it! I've been looking for 5 months for a Seal Gray Targa, 1 owner, good carfax, etc. I finally found it, got a good deal b/c the dealer had had it since Nov. and am just going to go through with it. I know I'll spend the $1k at some point. But I can live with that. See you soon with pics. Piccia

POST 4Original post

If it is an 02 is there any time left on the factory warranty? Even with the cost of the RMS it sounds like a good deal if this is the car you want. Also, just because the RMS is damp or even develops a small leak does not mean it is critical. Most people get this fixed right away because it is covered under warranty; however, it does not always need taken care of so quickly if you are flipping the bill. Did you check into a warranty? Might cost you $1.5K to $2K but well worth it if you think you will have a RMS bill comming down the pike. Good luck!

POST 5Original post

Good for you! That's what I'd say as well. If you've found the exact car you want, have already done your due diligence on the inspection, and negotiated on what you feel is a good price, then why let $1K be a deal-breaker? Now go out there and enjoy it!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

jsaindc - the car went out of warranty in May. Porsche service said that if it was still with the first owner they might have gotten Corp. to take care of it. But since it's already been auctioned they wont. I've been looking into the extended warranties. Haven't decided on whether to get one yet. Lot's of mixed opinions.

POST 7Original post

Frankly, there are so many 02 996's out there, I wouldn't "settle" for any example. I'd keep looking for a really prestine car...you might pay a bit more, but it just might be worth it to avoid aggravation.
