Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I know that my clutch doesn't have much life left simply due to the mileage, and I do like the idea of having the IMSB replaced while the car is apart.
Leading evidence: 'Replace while the car is apart' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). At first it felt like there was a little bit of a slip when changing gears, but it was very subtle.

You can perform a test on your slave cylinder with a helper.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took the freshly washed and waxed C4S out for Cars & Coffee this morning, and when I was about halfway there I began to experience some clutch issues. At first it felt like there was a little bit of a slip when changing gears, but it was very subtle. The clutch pedal feels light and the engagement point feels different. I have to let the pedal almost all the way out before clutch engages. It's difficult to put the car in gear now too.
Oh well... I guess it's time to put in a ceramic IMSB while everything is apart.
My wife is really on me now to sell this car and buy one that will spend less time in the shop...
I'm sure I'll just get it fixed and keep it. I've got two kids in college and just bought a new house... so buying another car doesn't make sense for me right now.
New clutch it is!
How many miles do you have on it Dennis ? I have about 81K on mine, and it seems to be the "time". No slippage yet, but it will need one soon I am sure.
Could be the clutch but when was the last time you have the brake and *clutch* fluid flushed and bled?
If it has been some time you might consider doing that before a new clutch.
Dennis - I feel your pain.
My clutch went with almost no notice a couple of months ago. It was quite bizarre and unexpected. I took the opportunity to get a bunch of work done and am now happy keeping the car for another 5 years... get the clutch done, do the IMS and RMS at the same time and the car will drive like new and give you piece of mind that there are no big jobs that might cause issues for you.
Good luck!
Dennis,
If you think the problem is that your clutch slave cylinder is bad rather than the pressure plate, I have one I can send you for free. It only had 57K miles on it when I changed it. It worked fine but I just wanted to replace it while the trans was out. Either way its yours if you need it. You can perform a test on your slave cylinder with a helper.
If you decide to go all out and do the clutch, RMS, IMSB, etc. I have a brand new pilot bearing and RMS I bought for spares, both still in the packaging.
hmm....
my clutch is pretty stiff(74k miles) and svc guys say it's about time, and that when it stiffens, it's usually time to change it...so it's strange that your symptom is so different and you still have soft clutch.
good news is it'll be good excuse to get the ims/rms stuff all done for me as well
btw, glad to hear you've got 125k miles...it'd be nice if we get more stories of the water-cooled being as reliable as the air-cooled
having previously owned an '89 cabriolet, i find it interesting that many forums consider 300k miles air-cooled engines as the "norm" when the reality is that many people have had rebuilds/valve guides issues between 50-100k miles. conversely, people consider (eventual) engine failures due to IMS/RMS as the norm, despite it only happening to probably the same % of people who have had valve guide issues.

Thanks KrazyK. I'll let you know.
I travel frequently so I find it difficult to find the time to work on my car (I'm typing this from beautiful Hawaii). I have an excellent mechanic who takes care of that for me. I'll get the car to him late this week or early next week and see what he says.

I use 3zero3 Motorsports in Wheatridge. They do very good work at good prices. They are also very performance oriented. They did my Evolution Motorsports ECU flash earlier this year.
