Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I am running DWs and I have to say I am not thrilled.

Personally, I'll be running 235/40s and 295/35s on my car in the near future.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am getting tires for my 03 996 with 18inch wheels. Stock sizes are 225f and 285r. I would like to dial back alittle under steer can I use a 235 or 245 to that? Or should I just stick with stock sizes? The tires I was looking at getting are Conti DW and this car is 95% street/dd.
Tire opinions are just that... I am running DWs and I have to say I am not thrilled. They took hundreds of miles to break in and don't grip like my old SportContact 2s. I won't buy them again.
Is your car a C2 or C4? I understand the C4 require better matching to avoid long term damage to the C4 specific mechanisms, this is less of a problem (within reason) for the C2 cars.
It's a c2. As far as tire choice I am not worried about absolute grip levels because these tires won't see the track. Ill buy a second set of wheels with real rubber for that.
As long as the overall diameter of the wheel is kept, you can got to wider wheels.
225 is width of the tire, 40 is a percentage( height of the tire) of the diameter, 18 is the wheels diameter.
So (225mm x 40%) x 2= x/25.4+18= o.d. of the wheel.
You can stray at most 1/2" in o.d.
So 235/40/r18 up front and 285/30/r18 in the rear will fit fine? Beside absolute grip is there and reason not to get the Conti DW? The tire will be used as daily driving duty. Ill get some stickies for the track.
You don't say what size front wheels you have? If you have 7.5" fronts, then 235/40/18 is as wide as you can go. With an 8" front, you can go 245 on the front. Rears can go from 265 to 295 on a 10" rear wheel. Your tire sizes may depend somewhat on availability from the manufacturer - not all sizes are available in all tire makes/models.
IMO, if you have PSM, just pick whatever tire that fits and looks good. The difference in sizes you are considering are so small it will not make a difference in the real world, especially with PSM. Try increasing your tire pressure front to rear to balance the car. This of course will depend on the tire construction, but generally a dot street tire will pick up grip with more pressure, but it's not linear and depends on the side wall stiffness etc. With that said you will be fighting the PSM the whole way.
I highly recommend the book "Secrets of Solo Racing, Expert Techniques For Autocross & Time Trials" by Henry A. Watts
And "How To Make a your Car Handle" by Fred Puhn
The above two books both have a 911 on the cover
Also I have to mention that actual tire widths vary widely between manufacturers and even models. For instance in the early 21st century (been waiting to use that) Hoosier DOT race tires were no where close to the width written on the side, they were way wider like an inch wider! Go Hoosiers.

If you're going to get 235/40s for the front, go with 295/30s in the rear. 235/40s have a taller sidewall than 285s and it will look dorky having taller tires in the front (295/30s have a shorter sidewall as well, but it's less pronounced). Personally, I'll be running 235/40s and 295/35s on my car in the near future.
Yes, but I cant take credit for the removal. The car's steering feels a lot smoother when pushing it on track. No more torque steer. Should've done this a long time ago.
Another important thing, I think, is to stay close to the ratio between the front diameter and the rear diameter of the stock tire sizes. Changing this ratio dramatically (more than a few percent) can play havoc with ABS under heavy braking.
Adding camber to the front, dialing out some front toe-in, and adding a couple psi of front pressure will do more to change the understeer than 20mm of section width (which is not the same as tread width).
