I did this (installed without seals) based on what I've researched and what I discovered when I removed my dual row bearing.

Plus I thought I would have to change the clutch as the PO had not done so and with 56K on the original (so I thought), I was ready to replace it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Like many of y'all, I decided to bite the bullet and do a little preventative maintenance. I took ownership of my car about a month ago and after night one I noticed a small puddle of oil on the garage floor. So, not knowing if it was an RMS, case bolt or IMS seal leak, I dropped the tranny and proceeded to investigate. I ordered all the parts to do the job, RMS, 4 case bolts, IMS (pelican kit, not LNEs), etc... Plus I thought I would have to change the clutch as the PO had not done so and with 56K on the original (so I thought), I was ready to replace it. To my surprise, it was like new. Lots of life left. The PO bought the car in Nov-Dec of 11 and based on the markings on the pressure plate, it looks like it was replaced in Sept 11 (~10K miles ago). So, score one for the home team :-) I discovered my 01 sported the dual row bearing, but I wasn't 100% sure I wanted to put basically a stock single row bearing in as a replacement. So, with some advice and guidance from KrazyK and Imre, I went with a ceramic hybrid. I ended up using the pelican kit minus their bearing. I used the ceramic hybrid bearing with both seals removed. I did this (installed without seals) based on what I've researched and what I discovered when I removed my dual row bearing. The original bearing looked fine; however, when I removed the seals oil gushed out. The seals were compromised. I'm not going to postulate what could happen but I can't imagine a leaking seal to be a good thing. Anyway, I'm running sealess like a few others on here. It's all buttoned back up now waiting on some fresh oil. The install took some time but was easy (easy if you've been wrenching on cars for a while ;-). Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience with my fellow 996ers.

POST 4Original post

Could you please post up the specs for the bearing you used? Where you purchase, part number, etc... I'm interested in this option also.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, the parts I used for the IMS replacement were of course the Pelican kit which goes for $165 and the Boca ceramic hybrid bearing part # SMR6204C-2RS TH9/C3 #3 which goes for $69.95 ( http://www.bocabearings.com/productd...px?ItemID=4260 ) I'd love to take the credit for finding the bearing but the hard work and research credit goes to KrazyK and Imo000 (Imre). Those two pointed me in the right direction and gave me the pointers I needed to do it right. In the end, I decided to go the single bearing route as Imre's double bearing method required machine work to the snap ring and procurement of a specific sized spacer. I could have done it but since I'd already ordered the Pelican kit, I decided to go the single bearing route like KrazyK. It was simple. Just had to press the Pelican bearing off and press on the Boca bearing and install. So for around $235, I have a very nice IMS setup.
