Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My new 996 C4S (manual) broke down yesterday and was towed home, just 4 hours/80 miles after it was delivered brand new.
The gear lever is jammed in 1st gear, although no gear is actually engaged so the car is in neutral. So the car cannot be driven!
Here in the UK we are having a 4-day holiday weekend due to the Queen's jubilee and Porsche centres do not re-open till Wednesday!
Any thoughts/suggestions/advice would be much appreciated!!
such bad luck and on a bank holiday - last time sim happened to me (actually my wife)the gear linkage (or thats what i was told) had broken and was stuck in gear. suggest bursting into tears with the dealer and that life long dream now ruined and go for max re-imbursment u dont expect a new pcar to breakdown. hope u havnt fallen out of love already
Wow. Darn bad luck.Does sound like a linkage problem.
I will chime in with all the others and suggest you seek maximum consolation from your dealer. Rather than tears, I would firmly state to them that this was a failure of pre-delivery inspection. There is no way that a properly assembled and pre-delivery inspected Porsche should fail within 80 miles. I understand that there is a long wait for delivery of C4S in UK, and this was particularly aggravated by the car failure just before a long holiday, where you had expected to enjoy the car after such a long, long wait.
The reality is that s##t happens. Fortunately, since the transmission is actually in neutral and not stuck in gear while it is only the lever that is stuck, this sounds like it is a simple linkage problem. It should easily be remedied with no permanent effects. Now, as to the remedy for the aggravation and heartache? Hmmmmmm. A car cover would do nicely, thank you. Or maybe some other easily applied extra doohicky that you may want. I am sure the dealers don't want an unhappy customer for an otherwise excellent car.
