I also have one kid and a wife who is 8 months pregnant - those are probably the biggest reasons I too have not pushed the car to it's limits.

I have had my Car since November and have not had a chance to push it yet.
So far only achieved 137MPH on the freeway. How fast have you guys gone not on the track?
I have taken a Motorcycle to 155MPH. It was more thrilling than Sky Diving. On a bike going that fast and seeing the asphalt wizzing by, you know if you fall your done. When you jump out of a plane you freefall at about 130MPH but the ground is so far away you can't see it, thus you have no "frame" of reference. Here is a picture of my free fall, you can see what 130MPH does to your hair.
It's pretty hard to go faster than 130 MPH at the track with a normally aspirated Porsche, unless the track has some really, really long straights. I've had my car up to 165 on the highway, but I only held that speed for about five seconds. Also, I had pretty new tires and there was NO traffic and it was in the middle of the desert.
I got up 152mph indicated a couple weeks ago.
I was on the 15N late at night, and I decided I wanted to crack the 150mph barrier. Previously I had reached 135mph, but 150 sounded like a good mile-stone.
I don't have an aero-kit, but I was surprised at how smooth and secure I felt at that speed. I was accelerating pretty good when I passed 150mph, and I was tempted to go for more, but I saw taillights way off in the distance.
There's a 4 lane highway 5 miles long that got orphaned between two towns near here. Something to do with preserving some near-extinct mosquito or something stopped the construction and orphaned it from the eventual main hiway. One ramp at either end. I did 170+ mph on several occasions to celebrate the completion of the car's 2000 mile break-in. Red line 1st through 4th, chickened out on 5th and short shifted to 6th. Haven't done it again since. More fun to go fast on corners in a race track.
hi guys hope ya dnt mind me posting here,we've had 160mph out of my 964 and that was flat out,and for my non porsche cars ive achieved 190mph in my cosworth (see my sig. for more details)
thanks chayten
Hello,
apart from the pics attached, I've seen the following on some of my cars
305 klm/h 964 Turbo (965) 1991 modified
285 klm/h 951S (91 model)...modified
280 klm/h (02) C4S
265 klm/h Carrera 3,2 (78)
So far only achieved 137MPH on the freeway. How fast have you guys gone not on the track?
Since 60 MPH is 88' a sec, 150 MPH would be 220" a sec. Also, when you consider that it's almost impossible to hit those kinds of speeds during normal driving hours, chances are that you'll be speeding at night where your visibility is severely restricted. I know it's a lot of fun to drive at speed, but **** happens.
As many others have posted on numerous occassions, save it for the track. Okay, I'll get off my soap box.
Well my pics were taken on the track !!! :-)
Due to the fact that this was an extremely boring and sterilized experience, I 've sold all my Porsches and bought a Trabant which has a top speed of 120 klms/h (70 mph). This is the local speed limit. Was for a moment considering a VW Golf 1.6, but this was unreasonably fast (200 klms/h top speed)
What do I need a car this fast ???
Ever been to Canada or the American Mid-West? Lots of room there. Toronto to barrie on the 400 North, 267kph, not sure what that is in MPH but it's a descent pace. Bright sunny skies, about 15 degrees, its like a 4 lane highway, no traffic except for the occasional car every 2kms which can hear our convoy comming from miles away (huzzah for bypass pipes) and pull out of the fast lane well ahead of time and shift over to the far right lanes.
I'd say that that is reasonably safe since there is plenty of "oh ****" space between you and any innocent motorist trudging along.
Believe me tho, if i lived next to mosport, or had a nurburgring only 3 hrs away..i would be saving it for the track
No, I haven't been there but it sounds like a great place to drive your 996 fast and safely. I live in the NE US, and there are almost no places here to go fast safely at least IMO.
There was a guy going 142 in his Honda on I 5. $6,000 dollar fine(30 track days). No more license. Too much money for me.
2002 C2 155 track
2004 GT3 157 -166 every lap on a dry day.
Track day $175/day
The corners at 80 mph are more intense. On the straights when you are going the fastest is when it is the most relaxing

I'm with you. Any 16 year old kid who just got his license, can press down on the gas pedal and go as fast as his car can take him. Now the guy who can take a corner at 80 MPH when others are spinng out at 75 MPH, is the guy who has the bragging rights.
Nice Chayten..I also maxed out my 964 when I had it. Man, the sound of that aircool 3.6L, nothing like it. I've only taken the 996 up to around 135mph on a deserted highway with no cars in sight.
i don't think so....
look up "smokey" nagata...he owns Top Secret tunning and has set the speeding record on 5 continents.
0-300km+ trials.
he has been arrested in: japan, england, new zeland at 300+kph (in england and uk all u see is a stream of speed cam's goin off..) You can find this on the last option magazine international DVD issue.
Apparently I'm the skirt in the group - I haven't had the ***** to take it past 110mph. The car felt extremely stable, was more quiet than expected (for a soft top) and had a lot of legs left, but I'm afraid of what the CHP would do if they caught me going 110, let alone the car's maximum speed.
I disagree. It's way harder to speed in Canada, ESPECIALLY Toronto. Plus, radar detectors are illegal too. But, it IS easier to work the court system to get tickets handled cleverly...
hey guys this is really interesting, I'm Canadian-born and a dream of mine has been to drive across the prairies in a hot car. Say Tronno to Vancouver.
I just have these visions of the beautiful Canadian praries whizzing by, twisties through the rockies and cap it off with a weekend in Vancouver.
Given the right fuzzbuster setup, you think it would be a sweet ride? 140+ mph?
In my Porsche 178-183 MPH on Autobahn 7 from Rothenburg towards Wurzburgh on a Sunday ( not many trucks allowed on the roads on Sunday's). Outside that MACH 2+ in a US GOVT provided jet with you the tax payers picking up the tab, THANKS
A close friend of mine in organizing a 5000km cross canada gumball-esque race either this summer or next. Supposidly he's planned the route so that the egress and ingress routes are completly differenct and only 500km is the same course. It should be easier on the wallet than a gumball and quite fun, which is the most important.
The car is stable although the front end is a little light; aircraft was of the F16 type. Lucky bastard I am but at last these days I am old enough and of a position where I fly a desk.
If you make it to Germany remember most Autobahns these days have some sort of speed restriction due to the number of cars, usually 120KM. As you get away from the major cities you can begin to drive but again you have trucks that are limited to 100KM so that tends to cause problems. This is why I would recommend if you want to open up your car drive on a Sunday, only certain trucks can drive that awful 100KM thus reducing the number of Opels and Fords clogging the left lane. Also realize the Germans are VERY good drivers, the Russians, Turks and Americans overall are not as experienced so watch out and have fun. Lastly you can rent a Porsche from a dealer, sorry do not remember the cost but my car is in the shop in Mannheim for a new clutch so I could check if you like.
Cheers
Wow $6,000K is expensive!! I bet his insurance rate will sky rocket as a result of the "reckless driving" $175 is definately a bargain! The key then is to use the track to fulfill the need! I bet the corners at 80mph are more intense, and I bet you see some people slide out at that speed!
162MPH in the New Mexico desert @ 6000 feet. "I'm givin' it all she's got, cap'n...".
The idea of hitting a jack rabbit at that speed boggles the mind.
Rented a BMW 320 tdi family wagon in Germany. Speedo says please do not exceed 230 KPH.
So that would be 143 MPH in a iddy biddy turbo diesel? Sunday on the Autobahn this little
car did 153MPH. Astonishing. They have automated speed traps there so you really have to watch your
signs.
I've only owned my current 996 for a week or so now, but on the drive back form Florida my wife and I (and yes, she loved it) had it to about 142. It has an alignm, ent issue so I got some shakes and backed off. To date, the fastest I've been was in a precious twin-turbo Dodge Stealth @ 156 mph. I'm kinda curious as to what the 996 will go. All stock so far. Be careful!!!
I haven't checked the laws to verify, but a client of mine warned me that in California, if you get caught going 100 or higher, they can even take you away in the patrol car - apparently, the CHP was finding that normal fines weren't getting people to slow down on their way to Vegas. I take everything with a grain of salt until I can verify it, but the reference to a guy getting fined $6,000 in California leads me to believe that something very bad would happen...
Yeah I got a ticket for doing 97mph on the 15 - literally a mile from the Nevada border. I can't remember what it was called - reckless driving or something like that. Cost me a few hundred for the ticket, and a rate increase for 3 years on my insurance.
made 240km/h so far on the german autobahn, couldn't go faster because i have winter tires mounted actually. i'll go there again in spring with the summer tires to see how fast it really goes.
I just made that trip from Vegas to LA this summer and didn't see 1 patrol car as I came and went. That HWY isn't as deserted as I thought it would be and traffic doesn't drive as fast a DC beltway traffic, oddly.
In most states 20 over is wreckless and a ticket to jail for a night.

Several years ago I was taking a drive to Ocean City, MD. In order to beat the traffic I left my house around 3:30 AM. About an hour later, when I was on RT 50 and travelling at a speed of around 80 MPH, one car and then another passed me so quickly that I though my speedometer was broken. I'd estimate that the cars were travelling at speeds in excess of 150 MPH. After they passed me, a State Trooper went flying past me. About five miles further down the road I saw three State Trooper cars and the two speeding cars on the side of the road. The drivers of the speeding cars appeared to be in their late teens, early 20s. Both kids who were handcuffed, were literally being dragged by the Troopers to one of the Trooper's cars. I read in the local paper the next day that these kids were charged with multiple moving violations, the most serious of which was racing. I never followed the case, but it wouldn't surprise me if a good lawyer could got the charges reduced.
BTW, one of the cars was a 911 and the other wan a Vette.
Rt 50 is known for fast runs. There is a standing record of less than 7 mins to get from Annapolis to DC. The main problem thoug,h is that MSP tend to just cruise in the number 2 lane waiting for someone to blow by.
Also, for many Rt 50 is their route home from Capitol Raceway on Test and Tune night and folks are still full of adrenaline.
In CA, what happens when you get stopped doing 100+mph can vary.
I was stopped doing 120mph on I280 in Palo Alto. As soon as the officer "engaged" my vehicle, I pulled over with my hands in plain site. Before I drove away (yes, drove...), he and I had a friendly discussion about my car and it's features. Oh, I dfid get a serious ticket and two points on my license. I still have the ticket, it's written up as "Speed in excess of 100mph". Went to court and plead guilty to speeding but at a reduced mph due to my outright shameless begging (wife was around 8 months pregnant at the time and I would have lost my license...).
Even though I got off really easy, I will not let that happen again. 5+ years and knock on carbon fibre, no tickets at all. Kids do that to ya, don't ya know.

I also have one kid and a wife who is 8 months pregnant - those are probably the biggest reasons I too have not pushed the car to it's limits. Explaining either an accident or a night in jail to my wife would be worse than anything the police can do to me...
I'm with you, blackcab - I've got three kids under 10, and my wife was "joking" the other day that if I killed myself in the p-car doing something stupid, she would pummel my dead body and cuss me out at the funeral.
Women... they can be so emotional...
Bikers are the ones that claim it and it was on the local news. It's only 30 miles away from the DC line it's not like they drove up to the White House..lol!
I've hit the 150 mark a few times on road trips, but nothing more. I ease up on the accelerator these days in fear of a monster ticket. Been clocked doing 115 i(in a 55) in upstate NY and thankfully, they didn't lock me up. Though I did get 5 tickets that night and a suspended license. Never again!
Hee, hee, hee... Sound's about like my wife!
Let me tell you, in my case no amount of lost manliness begging for mercy in open court could be worse than the whoop-a$$ I would have gotten from my wife if I had to tell her that when she goes into labor, she'll have to drive herself to the hospital.
Yeah, I drove away ticketless the two times I was pulled over at 100 plus. I typically expect to go to jail or receive no ticket.
The problem with the DC area these days in regard to speeding is they must run everything when they pull you over because of September 11. The days of "slow it down" without even running my license are over.
I hit 152 mph on highway 95 in Nevada. This is the road that connects the Reno area with Las Vegas. I was driving in my 2004 C2 Cab with the top down. Wow what a thrill and there still was plenty of pedal left but I did not have the ***** to push further. My GF was in the car and she was cheering my on! I might try to beat me own personal record this year
For me I don't go out to try to beat my record I only do it in broad day light and when I see that the road just happens to be wide open.
One of the reason's I got the Cabrio is that in the Summer it's more than just a fast car, it's also a cruiser to "enjoy the ride" in. If I had a Coupe, I'd be flying all over the place with no regard.
Hehe, I hit 155mph just last wednesday in the I-10 going from Phoenix to L.A. Car was still pulling strong but I had to back off as I was seeing some traffic in the distance.
I once (in 1986) got a ticket for 115mph (I was doing more, but the CHiPpy was nice). No jail, but he told me it's up to him wether to take me in or not. Ticket cost me $250 +2 points. I'm sure rates have gone up since then.
I've been lucky on the Beltway, sort of. Last time they wanted to give me a ticket I got away from 'em, in a 4-cyl minivan, which blends in a bit better than a Porsche.
Lately in the 996 I take every opportunity to stretch its legs. I haven't found a clear enough spot with all the traffic to go very fast but it's still fun. I was wondering if 270 or 70 out past Frederick might be a good place.
(hypothetically speaking, of course)
Bill
255km/h or 158 mph is the fastest I did on a toll road in Poland. I was in Germany last week but it was snowing so I could not unleash the beast, fastest when it was clear was 235 which is quite normal for me to reach those speeds when going on a long A to B.
I hosted an event up at 70/80 1/4 track back in '01 for my old car club, which had me driving from downtown DC to Urbana weekly, prior to the date of the event. 70W up to Urbana seemed pretty quiet, BUT I never felt comfortable doing excessive speeds in that area. The comfort didn't come in until I hit the 4 lanes of 270, note this was during the week and during lunch hours. Since then though, MSP has stepped up to Lidar on 270.
I've hit 166 on the jersey turnpike and recently did 160 on the PA turnpike on the way to the Detroit Auto Show. Both turnpikes have a few spots with concrete barriers on both sides, downhill with excellent visibility so if you're already doing 85 or so and you're payin attention it will get there fairly easy. I did get a ticket in Michigan on the way back for 85 in a 70. I admitted that I was a rabid STEELERS fan an I was just tryin to get back for the game. He reduced the ticket to 74 in a 70 with no points. I lucked out cause he was a STEELER fan also. He stuck his head in the car so I know he saw the two terrible towels and my yellow Pittsburgh hat. It turned out to be a blessing cause at the time he pulled me over I had my calculator out and had figured if I averaged 92MPH on the way back I could make it back for the game. As a result I slowed it way down and on the way back found a STEELERS sports bar 20 seconds of the turnpike. Needless to say I'll be back in Detroit in two weeks to pay the ticket in person!!!!!
Only 135 when I just got the car. I get alot of joy just pushing down the throttle to 60 / 70 in a safe urban scenario involving coners which gives the sensation of speed.
I have a buddy back in Ireland who just got clocked on a motorcycle doing 130 OVER THE LIMIT!
Keith
I briefly reached 250 kph (approx 150 mph) but backed off as I felt the sensation of the front getting a little light. I find the diffence between 230 (easy; very stable) and 250 to be huge. For those describing 150+ how does the car feel? Do you ever feel at risk of losing control? Are the increments above 250 as noticeable?
Well I reached 290 klm/h last night. Took a pic at 280 with my mobile, so the quality is poor. Strangely the car had more. I believe I could see the magic 300klm/h number
Not bad for a standard 996 C4S (6 speed manual)
The car was VERY stable at that speed.
when I had a 928s in Europe and travelled between Amsterdam and Hamburg (about 350miles) for about 4 months once, sometimes twice a week......I maxed 280KM/H on the speedometer..don't know if they are accurate.but it felt superfast and in Germany you can keep this speed for minutes, especially at night! Here in the States the fastest I went was 138MPH.. for a couple of seconds to affraid to get a ticket.
996 Turbo here (stock engine). Top speed so far: 323 km/h (indicated). Will do some more testing as soon as summer tires are back on.
Here's a little pic of my previous record at 313km/h:
